New Fence should we help pay?

Someone has just moved into the house at the end of our back garden- our back gardens meet.

Our new neighbour wants to replace the perfectly functional fence with new 2m panels because he has a Doberman dog.

My husband feels that we should offer to pay something towards the new fence since it's 'ours' ......

What do you think?

If there is nothing wrong with the fence, and is of equal height, then why would you pay? It's their choice to replace the fence, not necessity!

I was going to say you should offer, but if the old one is ok i'm not so sure. Isn't that good enough to keep the dog in.

I'd tell him to erect a new fence on his own side and keep the other one intact. I suppose it could end up looking awful, though.

The old fence is perfectly fine... just needs a coat of preservative.

The new fence is going to be much higher...I think Dobermans are quite big dogs.

He hasn't asked for a contribution.

Whose fence is it? Your deeds should say so.

We replaced both our left and right rear fences. We only actually "own" the left one, but we paid for both because it was our choice to change them. One neighbour offered money but we turned it down.

It's our fence and we had no intension of changing it since it's very tidy and simply needs re coating with preservative.
The new neighbour wants it replaced with a higher fence to keep his dog from getting over

If there's nothing wrong with your fence then why would you contribute to a replacement??? Just by agreeing to let your neighbour have what he wants you are being neighbourly.

I am on the opposite side of this scenario. I have two big dogs, neighbour's fence drops down to 4' on one side. We have put bamboo screening up on our side for now, but neighbour has said we are welcome to replace the 4' panels with 6' panels if we like. I wouldn't dream of asking them to pay towards it - they don't have any desire to change their fencing, it suits their purpose just fine.

I wouldnt offer any money even if the fence was in bad condition. Its your fence you change it when you want. If a neighbour wants to replace your fence then its up to them to pay.
