Benefits for a 22 year old

Hello Everyone

I wonder if anyone can give some advice.

My friend who has been living alone, in a privately rented 2 bed property, has just had her son move back in with her after finishing Uni and then living away for a while.

Her son is currently unemployed and isn't claiming any benefits. He has been looking for a job since moving back just before Christmas but with no luck yet.

We are both woefully ignorant on benefits (she has never claimed any and doesn't know where to start) and wondered if there is anything that he can claim for to help pay towards his upkeep whilst he keeps on looking for a job.

She will now lose the single person element of her council tax, but he has no income to help pay for anything.

Helpful advice very much appreciated.

He can claim Job Seekers Allowance (or Universal Credit if operating in his area)

If she isn't working why isn't she claiming Job Seekers Allowance herself? That alone can open doors to other help and support.

It doesn't say the mum isn't working and as she is not receiving any benefits and keeping a 22 year old she must be on a fairly decent wage.

I misread the OP. I read "She will now lose the single person element of her council tax, but he has no income to help pay for anything." as, "but has no income" omitting 'he' which makes a huge difference.

I know this is hard, but the mother needs to make a statement of her earnings, and different outgoings, and show how her son needs to get a job, any job to help cover the increased costs due to him being there. It will be good for him to learn to be more responsible.

My son is 20, autistic, and we discussed matters when he got ESA.., I explained that I now need to pay more council tax, what it was and we came to an agreement as to how much he contributed to food and board if you like (its still less than it costs, but its a reasonable contribution).

If I can do it, anyone can.

He is trying to get a job, applying for positions all of the time, he just hasn't been successful as yet. He has had a temporary part-time job but that finished last year. In the area they live in even getting work in a fast food restaurant isn't that easy and he has no transport to get further afield.

All she wants to know is if there is any way he can get any help whilst being unemployed. He is well aware of his circumstances and how he needs to find work.

Yes, she is working full time in a job that covers rent, food and bills with a bit left over. She has always worked and has never claimed benefits such as job seekers herself, so has no idea what he may or may not be entitled to and how to go about claiming anything. Hence this post.

He can claim up to £57.90 a week JSA.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
