Travel insurance claim?

Hello,
I've just returned from a family holiday in New Zealand. I realised when we were 3 hours from landing in the UK that we'd left my daughter's car seat in our hotel. The hotel have it and are willing to post it to us but given its size it's going to be around £60. I'm not convinced that it will arrive in a decent shape and as a safety item I'm a little concerned. Also, until it arrives we are without a car seat, which is tricky as we live in a rural area.

My OH would prefer to minimise all these issues, buy a new one and claim on our travel insurance. My question is as the item is not technically lost, can I make a claim?
Many thanks!

You can claim but it would be fraudulent and you run the risk of prosecution.
It was clearly your mistake, why do you think someone else should pay?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • How can you legitimately claim for an item you forgot to bring home?

Wouldn't the excess be more than £60 anyway?
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

It wouldn't be "fraudulent" if the OP tells the truth. Of course, it might not be covered by the policy. The OP needs to check.

Since when does insurance exclude a "mistake"? Virtually every traffic accident is a "mistake" by someone. Insurance would be pretty useless if it excluded all mistakes. Do you think if the OP made a mistake in not looking when crossing the road and got hit they shouldn't be covered for medical expenses?

It's possible this particular scenario isn't covered. But not just because it was a "mistake".

No, the excess is only £50.

  • Thanks for your replies.

I'm not trying to make a fraudulent claim, just wondered if I could make a claim as the item isn't technically lost.
And yes, I am aware that it is my fault, but it would also be my fault if I crashed into someone else's car but I could still claim on my car insurance.

It's not clear from the policy wording if I have a genuine claim or not so I'll give them a call tomorrow.
    Thanks again :-)

  • Most policies use words like theft and loss, not left behind because of carelessness. It hasn't been stolen, and it certainly isn't lost, technically or otherwise, because you know exactly where it is and can get it back. Claims for loss usually need a Police report dated within 24 hours of the loss anyway.

If insurance covered things we left behind lot's of people would be a lot better off!

No, the excess is only £50.

    So you want a tenner?

Surely you just go and buy another seat?

If the insurance claim is successful and it is for the cost of a replacement car seat, it will probably be for around £250 to £300 (assuming that's a good quality seat) so after the excess is deducted, they will get far more than £10.
The £60 mentioned is the postage costs to get the original seat posted back
