Windows Virus Alert screen. Can't close browser.

A couple of time recently, I've gone to download a video, only to have an extra browser window open, along with a mechanical female voice, suggesting I may have a "Windows Virus", and telling me to ring an 800 number (rather difficult, since I'm in the UK), for help removing said "virus".

Trouble is, I can't close the browser window, nor switch to the original browser window(s), leaving me no option but to close down by switching off at the wall socket.

Anybody know how to close the browser (or, better yet, just the annoying window), without shutting off the mains power?

Try disconnecting from the internet and see if you can close the browser then.

If you stop going on dodgy websites you shouldnt get the popups.

Alternatively you can try using pop up blockers.

Chromes built in pop up blocker works quite well.

Might be worth having a look at malware software just in case youve clicked on anything else you shouldnt have. Malware bytes is my personal favorite.

Alt + tab might work but i doubt it of ctrl alt del doesnt.

ALT and F4 together should close the active open program ..

You most likely have malware on your machine and I would advise run a malwarebytes scan.
You can download it here :-

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Choose the free version, and decline the offer of a trial of the pro version

    Hope this helps
    Andy..

  • Also. use Chrome coz they have built in poo up blocker.
