Also remember February is a short month, which may help with your 90 days - I'll leave you to do the sums. ;)
Aaah, I'm so glad you lot are here and on the ball :D I'll work it out.

Just worked it out - 11th December to 12th March is 91 days. Still, Consumer Rights Act appears to be on my side here.

I'm gonna get my letter sent off today and see what happens. I'll keep the appointment at Renault for now, just in case I need either confirmation of a catastrophic issue with the engine, or hopefully extra info that results in a cheaper fix but I think this is unlikely at this stage.

I don't think it's wise to take a ten yr old car to a Renault main dealer.

There is no way the used car dealer will pay main dealer rates. They will most likely use their own garage. Have you spoken to them yet? Get the car recovered to them.

I'm taking it to the main dealer for proper diagnosis and details of what needs to be done to fix it. If it turns out to be something easily (and cheaply) fixable, then I'll just cover it myself. If they confirm what others have said, then I'll be looking to get my money back. I wasn't planning on making the dealer pay for the diagnosis.

So far, the dealer is not interested in doing anything about the car, so I doubt they'll be too accepting of me recovering the vehicle to them at this stage.

The renault dealer will not want to fix the problem on the cheap. They aren't mechanics.

All they will do is replace parts that their computer tells them to and the chap doing the work will be a novice.

I'm not asking them to fix it, I'm asking them to properly diagnose it. the service centre at the Renault dealer has assured me they have the tools to do this.

Where would you suggest I take it?

I think you are right for the diagnostics .
See what it says and cost of repair bearing in mind its a ten year old car .

They will follow a diag routine from Renault, most likely they will charge for the diags, maybe open up engine etc... This will most likely cost more than the car. You would be expected to mitigate your losses, the seller might/will dispute their findings leaving you with a huge bill (maybe). They will want to use their own garage.

Have you gone down to the dealer and sat in their sales office and made yourself known?

I'm confused, the garage where the car sat over the weekend is not a main dealer? Why move it to another garage? Incurring more costs.

Ok, I'll say it slightly differently.

Renault will not give you a true diagnostic of the actual fault and just that.

They will build many other issues into the diagnostic and also tell you that you'll need a couple of tyres too.

Taking an old car that is probably worth the same as a decent mountain bike to a Renault main dealer is madness.
