To be clear, my post wasn't referring to streaming content.

Re buffering and sources not working_The answer to that is to use only select quality sources/add ons. A subject that unfortunately I don't think we can discuss on here.

Suspect he's bought a now tv box, which means he'll still need to subscribe to get sports. Otherwise, it's most likely illegal. My mum used to have cable boxes that had been fiddled with, so just paid for basic cable and got all the premium channels for free, but that was 20 years ago, and not advisable.

He will have a chipped sky box.
Originally, sky were clever in that they rotated the codes on their cards every 5 minutes or so.
So if you cloned a box/card , it would be unusable 5 minutes later

Now cloning this gear is made possible with an internet connection to the box, feeding it live codes from a dodgy server every time they rotate ..

In answer to the OP's question, one would choose to pay the money to have legitimate sky, over one of these boxes, because it is not legal to use one.

That may or may not concern you ;)

That's not what's happening, they're not using sky boxes and they're not cloning anything.

    Maybe not in research land.

But in real world Manchester, I can assure you that that's exactly what they're doing.

Good quality, reliable piracy. That's the key.
They're not the rights holders, they're not allowed to be 'rebroadcasting' it.

Part of my job last year was working on a report into pirated pay TV, there are plenty of solution available on the likes of ebay and amazon market that pretty much are plug and play. We had half a dozen of them working in our office. Both VM and Sky are being hit.
Sky can't easily stop the main exploit until they replace all the analogue boxes out there, not easy given there's something like 6 million of them, VM have an easier route once they decide the numbers add up to spend the money
Sky go accounts are routinely pirated along with other similar platforms from around the world but these should start to be less and less over the next year or so.

But that is not the same as a cheap Android box or Amazon stick.
The systems you talk about are way more sophisticated than that.

    No they're not
A cheap box set up for card sharing is around £40

Chipped Sky boxes haven't worked for a long while, both Sky and VM are getting hit by card sharing in the main
