Hot water in bath - installer says not his problem

Hi all - had my entire house re-done.

Had a new bath installed and the water from it isn't hot enough (is fine everywhere else).

The person who did all the work is saying its an issue with the boiler (which they bought and gas installer installed). Another person is saying that can't be correct as there is hot water everywhere else in the house and is likely to do with the plumbing he has done.

The installer is refusing to look at it any more and saying ring the boiler company and say its not working properly and is requesting payment - something I dont want to pay for it if its not working properly.

Any advice welcome!!

Regards,

John

Using a mixer tap or separate taps?
  • its a mixer tap - which is what the other person said could be the issue (and is what I'm hoping it is)

the water temp goes up and down though (so it sometimes red hot)

Is "another person" a plumber or heating engineer? If not why are you listening to them? If you want a second opinion pay for someone who knows what they are talking about to give one.
  • Yes he is a plumber who works with the other person.

He would have to pay him to look at it and fix it - which is why I think he's saying its the boiler
  • Also I dont think I should be the one paying at the moment for someone else to look at it

Distance to the boiler and pipe size is a factor. A bath uses 22 mm pipes to deliver the water, this can increase the flow rate to a point where the boiler can't heat the water in time to deliver it. Don't open the tap fully, you will need to control the flow so the boiler can keep the temp constant.

The flow rate of the boiler is important, baths fill better with bigger boilers 30kwh or more, 24 and 28kwh will still heat the water but the flow rate at the tap needs to be controlled.

There is very little that can go wrong installing a bath and if when you open the tap the water flows freely then it's not a plumbing issue. This is a common problem with combi boilers, not a rare event.

The bath is the closest to the boiler - I'm not sure on the pipes used though.

The sink next to the bath remains hot all the time - water coming out at same speed. May just attach a hose pipe to fill the bath!

If they bought and supplied the boiler, then they're liable for it so can't disclaim liability by telling you to contact the boiler company.

Or is he saying its a problem with the boiler installation rather than the boiler itself?

Did he do any work that is not under scrutiny? If so, it would be advisable to pay him for work done satisfactorily and keep back a proportionate amount. You'll likely have to find out what the issue is and how much it would cost to fix before you'd know what a proportionate amount was though.

    Problem with the boiler itself

thanks for that information about the liability - some good information to have :)
