New savings scheme from Chancellor

Are you aware that the majority of people claiming housing benefit are working, many of them in full time work? I think the main problem in today's society is that even people working full time cannot afford to cover their basic needs, such as a roof over their head, without tax credit and housing benefit. That's because that they are paid low wages. I am quite fed up with the attitude here on this forum where it's free for all to demonise people who claim benefits. I believe that a true sign of a civilized society is how it takes care of it's most vulnerable members. That's maybe because I lived for many years in Scandinavia where they have a much more developed (civilized) welfare system. And don't worry, this government will not introduce any scheme which will help people on benefits as they are too busy to work out ways how to cut tax for top earners and make huge cuts on disability benefits.0

I understand that, but the 'basic needs' do not extend to frequent dinners in swanky restaurants in Mayfair/Fulham/Chelsea/Notting Hill etc and buying/renting in expensive postcode areas they cannot afford. Minimum wages do not translate to £30Kp.a either, so let's be realistic.
On the other hand, those who need help should get it - and should not be scorned upon for doing so!
I do not however see it as my responsibility to finance someones personal ambitions - or lack thereof!
I don't think anyone will fall for G.Os incentive, as if you are on benefits and can save e.g 50p/m, you are saying that you are being given 50p/m surplus to your requirements- and he or the next gov't will have it in a heartbeat - The workshy know that, the system milkers know that and as for the ones who won't work extra hours so that they stay within the gravy train - isn't that a warped form of MSE?
Don't blame the recipient - blame the sender.0 -

You forgot how much it actually costs for overpaid unqualified persons making legal decisions based on 'internal guidance' - the cost of staff and pensions at DWP, HMRC and councils for Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit...the cost is billions upon absolutely billions yearly and where the crux of 'welfare' really lays WAGES and perks.
Really should though limit tax credits per 2 per family for new families/claims (UK cannot afford unlimited children even with a cap) and if you get child tax credits if you choose not to work or take no legal action for employment dismissal you get no jobseekers allowance.
I agree with you though, low and then minimum wage have meant state dependency - why sell off all the public assets, steel etc to then subsidise via state financial help AND the cost of financial administration...payroll in public owned companies was cheap as compared to what it costs to administer state financial help.
If the Tories get Brexit, they get to sell everything off for short term gains just like last time... and long term...we all pay. Again.
I have no shame in admitting I get state financial assistance because my physical health is not what it should be, it has not stopped me saving thousands of pounds because I don't have luxuries or the health to have them (I cant even have 1 pint nor 1 wine on celebration occasions). Neither has it stopped government departments destroying medical evidence and family and a unpaid carer statements to withhold truth, refusing to send decisions to tribunal when requested and refusing to follow tribunal outcomes.
If people actually knew the level of discrimination government depts are adhering to to stop payments of qualified help they would be shocked. Never mind ATOS and the likes.
A government dept was told to make 6 years back payment to me, they sent 6 months, and my legal aid bill has cost a lot more than my yearly 'financial assistance' since last May...and looks like it is going to be alot higher for 2016-17 as a QC is taking a government dept to court for disability discrimination....and you should see their own files - evidence against them its shockingly a !!!! take :rotfl:
Encouraging people to save is a good thing, between HTB and this savings scheme and my interest from everywhere I will be circa 5 grand up as I am being loaned money monthly to help pay in to my HTB to buy a cheap fixer up property with a small mortgage so I can stop claiming HB assistance and start a business - in 5/6/7 years get equity out to pay my 'loan' back with no interest charged.
In 2006 I was in financial ruin, 2015 debt free, the next 5 year plan is homeowner - all without that expected government backdated cheque, I'm not sitting about waiting on that then making a plan.
The majority aint as clued up financially as me, as I said physically I have big challenges but mentally I know how to get there even with government depts against me, I have family members who screw the DWP and CTC system, moan its not enough but its many bad decisions on budgets and planning and they moan to someone they know gets little help with physical issues...they !!!!! about me to others behind my back - then who's signing on lying about job interviews ? Not me.
And thats what the Tories caused, those the less fortunate with disability being picked on by every class including the jobseekers class jealous of people who had to fight to keep disability premiums. Tories - divide and conquer.
