Best vegetable seeds?

I was wondering where people feel you can buy the best value vegetable seeds (that they have used successfully) please?

I don't have a Wilkinsons nearby but do have B&M/home bargains and aldi/lidl. I've seen all of these names pop up but unsure how they all compare and if there is much in it?

I would be looking for quite basic seeds, tomatoes, cucumbers, spring onions, salad etc. as a little limited on space I'm afraid.

Sorry if there is already a similar thread(s), couldn't spot one when I searched.

I get good germination from Lidl.

I've had a lot from 'Seeds by post'
When you say you're only wanting basic seeds, it's sometimes better to buy the more exotic stuff. Basic veg can be cheap to buy in the shops (although it may not taste as good as home grown) So perhaps you're better putting your time into growing the more unusual stull that would be expensive to buy in the shops.

Had a quick look and noticed that the default number of seeds (e.g., for a climbing french bean) was quite small - 20 seeds for 65p (cf. simplyseeds.co.uk, which I have found to be reasonably cheap and good - also for seed potatoes) - but then noticed that you can chose 60 or 80 seeds from the not-so-obvious-at-first drop-down menu (in the couple of examples I looked at) for 97p - so thanks! - will be checking them out next year! Just looked at carrots too - 6000 seeds for 97p!

They have a great range of unusual fruit & veg - and it's very cheap. They sell small packs of seed which is handy as I don't want 30 courgettes! :-)

They do a lot of heirloom & heritage varieties.

I buy seed from all over and the germination rate is very very high..

Its the compost. I did a trial with some pea seeds Hurst Greenshaft and Kelvedon Wonder.

Cheap Asda compost, horrible to work with like matted cotton wool but out of 40 seeds planted (20 of each) i got something like a 96% germination rate.

B&Q compost which is now named Verve had even better results with just 1 or 2 not germination (same 20 of each planted)

Some expensive big named brand, a couple of small little shoots started and
then died. None of the rest germinated at all. A total failure.

The cheapo ASDA one surprised me as it looked awful in the bag and to work with but it worked, which at the end of the day is what counts.

I still prefer the B&Q one though.

My B&Q based compost went green on top this year with the seeds I had in pots over winter. Had to add grit to those that didn't have it.

Yes, I know I don't overwinter veg seed, but it's just an observation about the compost last time around. The next lot will probably be different.

This spring, for veg, I've made my own mix, which includes vermiculite. When you're paying 30p a seed for some, like tomatoes, it makes sense. No green algae on that and 100% germination on the ones that really matter.

Had a peony germinate a few weeks ago after standing outside for 3 winters. I never give up!
