Hi

The cig lighter is not working it seems on my civic.

Tom Tom is dead and won't charge. Have tried a 2nd USB cable and port and neither work. The light on one port Is on depending on the position it's inserted and sometimes it's off or flickers.

Would this indicate it's the fuse given the light is sometimes on or the actual metal cig lighter....If it's the latter can it be actually pulled out on an 8th generation model?

Thanks

Believe it or not, there are two types of "lighter socket", one is for accessories and lighter, the other is for lighter. Often when people have issues, it's because the manufacturer fitted a dedicated lighter socket.

I would try the fuse first, they are easy and cheaper enough.

Your car manual will show you which fuse it is.
  • If the light is on, it isn't the fuse. You can't get 'just enough 12v' through to illuminate an LED but not enough for the outlet to work.

I thought it wasn't the fuse. Sounds like I can't get a replacement for Monday so will have to keep charging it on the laptop. I only recently bought the car.. wonder if there is a lighter for rear passengers? Is it a case of yanking out the old lighter. Seems maybe loose enough to pull out from top...not sure how I would connect any wires though...is it a local garage job?

There won't be a lighter socket for the rear passengers, a manufacturer would never do this in a family vehicle for risk of a child doing themselves an injury.
There may be a rear auxiliary power socket (as mentioned in my last post), you may find this will be a better fit for your device.

Whatever, doubt op cares what it is 'technically', just that its like a 'lighter' and can be used to charge a device!

Jesus christ why do people around this board have to nit pick everything !
Maybe some people are looking for an ego boost, or trying to look clever or something, who knows

Equally, for those who would just like people to get things right, rather than accepting vagueness and inaccuracy (in all things from naming parts to spelling and grammar), the laissez-faire 'it's OK, you know what I meant' attitude is just as irritating.

Don't know about you but there's a difference between wanting people to get spelling and grammar right and people wanting everybody to understand vehicle technology! Whether somebody understands the difference between a cigarette lighter and auxiliary plug or not is of no relevance to anything.

Same as when a lot of people say they had to change a tyre at the side of the road -- well using common sense we know they didn't change the tyre, they changed the wheel

If the light is "working sometimes" the fuse is ok.
If it is a cig lighter socket, and has been used as such, then there is a chance that it is full of crap / corroded inside. Get a piece of scotchbrite or fibreglass pencil and clean around the inside paying special attention to the +ve pip at the bottom and hoover out the bits. There is also the possibility that it has large gaps around the outside -ve casing and the clips on the charger are not making contact all the time so you will need to ensure the charger is inserted correctly.

I can angle the plug so that the led is solid but still issues.

Will try give it a clean.

If not I'm guessing the 2nd socket is near the back of the armrest?

If no joy I'm guessing it's a local garage job?
