Just got my bill from British Gas with an £80.64 debit balance. It says 3/12/15 66223 estimated(the from EON switch date), 8/3/16 68251 estimated. I've just read it and it's 64551! I am guessing what I've done is read the first dial then assumed that the second one went around in the same direction not really paying attention to the numbers but the hand position! I hardly ever read it and I've misread it in the past. I wonder how long the figures have been out for.

As you admit that you "hardly ever read it and I've misread it in the past" you are one of the few that would actually benefit from a smart meter even if they are not currently that smart. Having your meter changed should automatically sort out your billing error.0

Thanks, I'll have to ask them about it. In the meantime I'll have to remember not to forget that the dials jump from clockwise to anti to clockwise to anti to clockwise!0

Can you not complain about their use of estimated readings for billing, and give them ACTUAL readings via email and attach dated pictures of the meter reading(s) and ask them to send a bill for ACTUAL usage and not estimated?
Do this by email, not on the phone.0 -

I'll get the camera out. I've already sent the readings via the internet and their system came back with !Uggg ooohh, that doesn't add up, we might need more info!0

Easily done with an electric dial meter.0

You switched supplier using estimated readings, just asking for problems.0 -

Not necessarily so. All meter readings on switch go through a third party for review just in case the meter has been mis-read. That said, if the historical data is based on erroneous readings by the customer, then it will be a case of 'garbage in/garbage out'.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
