Managed to get into my old EON account to get the bills.
    14/7 - 4/11 Previous:62813 Actual, Present: 65644 Customer reading
    4/11 - 2/12 Previous:65644 Customer, Present:66222 Estimated

So my big cockup was around 4/11. I better go to Specsavers! I had an old fridge on the blink at the time and I thought that had gobbled the electricity. I didn't realise there was a big issue until I got the bill!

Perhaps I never did attempt to read the meter at switchover as the date wasn't made clear. I think I was waiting for them to ask me but they never did. British gas have taken Eon's 2/12 estimate as the opening reading!

If you had an actual meter reading in July, then I would stop worrying. The old and new suppliers will use the reading given to them by the third party. You will not pay for the same energy twice but you may lose/gain out by a few £s. Last year, I went through this process. It took me 3 months to reach the agreed switch reading with the new supplier. The difference in cost was a couple of £s.

Even though you seem used to the stange procedure of reading a Dial Meter, you have suffered the dreaded " Meter misread syndrom"
Looking a friends bills who had a sudden £1200 demand, it turned out to be a misread by the customer of the 10k unit dial, but looking at the previous bills there had also been read errors by Meter Readers.

During conversations to get the bill corrected, BG admitted that these meters are well past their sell by date and changed it - Push for BG to change yours
