I'd completely forgotten they did it, I haven't used my ntl/vm space for 15 years.
I suspect they've done some checking and decided that too few users are using it to make it worthwhile to keep running, as most people only ever used it for hosting a few pictures (IIRC it was too small for more than a few pictures amd unless they increased it, it was only 10-100mb when I last looked), which most people will do now on facebook or one of the free services if they don't have their own larger site.
Reading their offer, they seem to be doing a reasonable transition deal to give you a year's hosting and domain name with a third party, but looking at the pricing they reckon that deal is worth it's not anything like as good as some.
I pay about £70 a year for 5gb of space, now 10gb* and "unlimited" traffic with a good UK host, and that's expensive compared to a lot but I stick with my current host because they're reliable, UK based, have great support when it's needed and I've never heard of them holding domains hostage or playing silly beggers if you leave (unlike some of the cheapies).
*I received an email from my host (34sp.com) this afternoon to say they were doubling the space on all accounts.0
