Do not go with nationwide

hi

just had a really bad experience with Nationwide Building Society for my mortgage application. due to some system upgrade they haven't even sent my application to the underwriters (despite me providing all the necessary info). this means my purchase (and sale) will fall through due to their incompetence.

I advise everyone thinking about taking a mortgage with them now to avoid them at all costs.

Did you use a broker? If not that is one reason. You can't lump one experience as all experiances

How long has the delay been? Why do you think the sale and purchase will fall through? Although it is annoying and frustrating that this has happened I don't see it as a reason for everyone not to go with Nationwide. My experience of Nationwide has always been that they have good customer service - are they not doing anything to put things right? Have you asked them if they can expedite your application so that it can be processed more quickly?

Will your buyers and sellers not wait?
How much time have they wasted?

Has your survey and conveyancing already been completed? I found these took the longest.

Perhaps the delays are not all down to Nationwide...

We used Nationwide and had a great experience.

They even sent us a congratulations on your new house welcome package with coffee, mugs, washing up liquid, toilet paper etc. to thank us for taking out a mortgage with them!!

I must say they have been a breath of fresh air compared to our old mortgage through Santander.

We used a broker for the first time with our current house. We will always use a broker from now on.

they had to lower the loan amount which is fine. then they said they will send to the underwriters to review again. fine.

however I was just told that some documents needs to be moved over to a new case number and will take 7 working days. and then the underwriters will take a look. which means this will delay the sale/purchase and risk it falling through.

they give all that as they make a lot of money of interest and fees from your house purchase. its all cheap stuff as well so little cost to them. Santander I heard are bad as well.

I would guess your problem was caused by someone at the branch not the building society itself. My son just bought with Nationwide and was extremely impressed with the service.

no it wasn't as I provided the evidence weeks ago and underwriters already reviewed it once.

I imagine there will be a lot that are impressed with them. however you will get some cases like mine where it doesn't go well and clearly its due to them. which should be enough to avoid them specially if you are in a chain and have to port the mortgage over. I have a feeling its to do with porting as they purposely want the chain to fail so I may end up selling without buying and end u paying an early repayment fee (£4.5k). I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case.
