do virgin block tethering for the 'get go'

Im aware virgin have a 'ban' on tethering
however does this happen immediately as soon as you try to request your first web page from a tethered device ?
reason I ask is that I have a spare PAYG virgin SIM that I can set up with 1GB data if I select the big data tariff
I was wondering if I could use up that 1GB via a tethered laptop before any block kicks in ? (would only take 2 to 3 days at most for me to use that 1GB up probably)
