Huh. Anything in the Event Log?

It's probably not related, but I found this hotfix helped some Windows 7 machines that were stuck checking for updates:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3102810

Here are my notes of the steps I took. I can't quite remember why I thought it was related to SP1, but this worked for me:

    1. Install KB3102810 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49540
    2. Scan for Windows Updates to see if the problem is resolved. If not, continue:
    3. Uninstall SP1 (Service Pack 1) via the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet.
    4. Stop the Windows Update Service (by running services.msc).
    5. Rename the %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution directory.
    6. Start the Windows Update Service.
    7. Install all appropriate updates from Windows Update EXCEPT SP1.
    8. Reboot the PC.
    9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 (if necessary) until all appropriate updates have been installed EXCEPT SP1.
    10. Install SP1.
    11. Re-install KB3102810.
Thanks, I'll read all that properly when I have time.:)
I too was considering installing it without the SP1, I've got all the disks.
It's funny that before when I had problems, installing IE 11 as a standalone, triggered all the updates. This time when installing IE 11, it updates as it installs, but only IE 11 updates.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Don't need a third desktop running Linux.

For around 2 years, prior to reinstalling Win 7 last summer, this pc had been running an OS based on FreeBSD 9, which trumps any Linux distro in the 'look how much of a geek I am' stakes. ;)

    ps. Just for bigfreddiel.
Have you got a recommendation for a Linux distro to install on an Asus Eee PC?

Runs as root by default, looks terrible, only suitable for testing hardware, or emergency file recovery.

You reckon that it's better than Porteus?

Not sure on that. But buy more memory and run somethings like mint msybe. fj

Don't know if it helps, but I have Arch Linux running on mine. It runs like a dream. It was a bit (okay, quite a lot) of a pain to set up, but it's easy to maintain.

Last year I had an old, seldom used, netbook on 7 that got stuck checking for updates. I spent days trying and nothing worked. Eventually I just chucked 10 on it instead :p
