HMRC do make mistakes. My husband recently had a tax bill saying he underpaid tax last tax year. They had him down as working at the place he was made redundant from in 2013. Yet his JSA and ESA were the correct amounts for the whole of the last tax year. On the telephone they knew the exact date he was made redundant and confirmed there was a mistake.

Do phone HMRC as has been advised. That should be the quickest route to sorting your problem.
  • Right well i rang HMRC and he said he doesn't know how they have mixed me and the other lady up, he said our national insurance numbers are nowhere near the same and that it is a mistake on their behalf because on my PAYE thing it says nothing about the work place i was supposed to have worked for
