Help found the reason for my poor credit

I have a poor credit rating. I assumed it was from a 10 year old bankrupcy but it's not. I joined Equifax and have found the culprit and I need advice on what to do about this.

I remember I did take out a Very catalogue back in 2010 but I overspent on it like an idiot and missed payments. I then agreed a payment plan but made a few payments then stopped. I think it was passed to someone else but can't remember. Anyway basically they just stopped chasing me up! I never had anymore phone calls or letters.

It is down as defaulted in 2012. I read after 6 years they can no longer chase me for it, is tat correct? So that would take me to 2018. But then what can I do to get this off my credit file?

Also I have two basic bank accounts. I took out one which had no branch near me and the online service was rubbish so took out one with Natwest which I use now and the other one is down on Equifax as zzzz (inactive) Does that affect me badly?

Oh and on my credit file is Next Directory. I no longer ave that. I missed payments in 2010, 2011 and 2012 but settled it in full in 2013. Is there any way I can get that removed or does it have to stay on my file for a certain time?

EDIT: I see equifax say it stays on tere for 7 years from the date of the last activity. I will have a long way to go to clear up my file. Does that mean that Very catalogue one will pop of in 2019 as 2012 is the last activity. And the next should disappear in 2020 as I paid it off in 2013. It's gonna take ages to clear up my credit!!! But at least now I know why it's shot to pieces.

The rest is all good as I learnt my lesson about debt.

Not that the score matters but on Equifax it's 300 which is poor.

Any advice on what I can do?

If you've not made a payment or acknowledged the debt for 6 years they cannot enforce the debt in court. They can still ask you for the money.

6 years after the debt defaulted it will come off your credit record whether you are paying it or not. That happens automatically at around the 6 year point.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

What can you do to remove it from your file? Answer: nothing, as it is a factual account of what happened and how you ran your account.

The default will remain on your credit history until 2018 so you will have a poor credit history until then.

If your other bank account is inactive then yes close it as although it being reported as inactive won't really have any impact on your credit history, there is still the risk of fraud as it is an open account.

Don't forget that you are only seeing one third of the picture, you also need to obtain copies of your report from Experian and Call Credit too.

You should register at Noddle (Call Credit) and ClearScore (Equifax) for free copies of your reports.

I am on Noddle but it shows none of that. Just my recent stuff. I heard ClearScore were inaccurate and I've just got my report from Equifax.
