Your energy provider cannot turn off your supply, nor force you to go elsewhere. Your water company cannot turn off your supply and is obliged to supply you, should you request it. I don't think your phone/broadband provider can disconnect you. All these service providers are obliged to deal with you, because they provide a vital service. In the 21st century banks also provide a vital service, but they continue to evade their social responsibilities. I think legislation is long overdue to stop this cavalier attitude of the banks, as exemplified by the case described here.

Are you by any chance using it as a business account?

If he was, surely any reputable service provider would point out that to do so was not allowed, and ask for such use to stop. A reputable service provider would not hang the customer out to dry without an explanation.

If anyone thought that TSB was actually independent of LBG this puts an end to that theory! They are totally using the same risk assessment profile. I have a few accounts with them. I do use them a lot for the contactless cashback etc. Can I ask whether you have been using the account for transactions?

Could be wrong but think TSB still use LBG systems / infrastructure but now that they have separated from LBG they can no longer see / share customer data with LBG. Otherwise I would have expected to have had closure letter for my TSB accounts at same time I got such letters for my Lloyds, BOS and Halifax accounts. Then again, only five weeks or so has passed since I got these letters so maybe I have the TSB letter to look forward too - hopefully not!

What we really need is these arrogant big bailed out banking groups breaking up back into smaller banks and legislation to put them on the same duty of care footing as other service providers who can't just sack their customers as and when they feel like it. That's bad enough but the fact they can do so without even enlightening a customer as to the reason or without discussing it first verges on the criminal. The apparent regularity that customers can have their accounts closed with 3 banks all at the same time for apparently no reason is ludicrous.
