  • Was the notebook you bought a reconditioned one? If not and it was a new one then PC World have to sort it out for at least one year not 28 days as they are trying to tell you!
  • well its 28 days with them and its a year with the manufacture. just as long as the problem isnt due to there negligence.

Tell them to boot to a linux disk and save your data, then ask them to do a factory restore and get all the Microsoft updates.

Then if thats done you should be fine to go, the problem is PC worlds not yours, either they sold you an illegal product or someone has stolen the key.

Not at all, your contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer - that's just what shops tell you to fob you off if they can't be bothered to sort out the problem yourself. It is one of your statutory rights and if it was a new product they cannot take away your statutory rights no matter what they may want you to think.

Does the laptop have a COA sticker on it?

If so, it's Microsoft's problem, and they should be able to sort it out.

If it's OEM software, which it will be on a new PC, it's not Microsofts problem at all. With an OEM licence, you get NO support from Microsoft and you have to contact the PC maker for support.
  • Assuming it has a coa sticker on, and that serial no. is being used by the PC, it is a problem with either product activation, wga, or someone else has stolen the serial no, either way, the only people who are going to sort that out is Microsoft. OEM or not.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Microsoft can help people obtain a genuine licence

As they take piracy so seriously, they ask people to report counterfeit versions to them, and what is effectively an amnesty, will give a new cheap or free copy to people who report it - free if the name of the vendor and proof of purchase can be produced.
  • The 28 days thing is complete tosh. They may be thinking about their possible liabilities regarding giving a refund.
As has been said it is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract.
Also its not just for a year after purchase but up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).
