For those eager to continue with this pointless debate I should probably point out that it's only single use bags that have a mandatory minimum charge. Bags for life are thicker and so could legally be given free of charge.

Out of interest - has anybody actually bothered to take a busted bag-for-life back and ask for a replacement?

Once or twice - yes. A 10p one - not since the obligatory charges came in. I seem to recall that it didn't even have to be from the same supermarket - which was probably a marketing ploy at the time.
I need to think of something new here...

Yes. I swapped one at Tesco a couple of week ago. It think I'd been using it for about six months.

If your buying stuff in PC World there is a good chance that whatever you bought will be priced a lot more than 8p higher than online!.

The handles are the weak point - once they go, the bag is useless.
Your can mend splits/holes in the side of the bag using duct tape.

But you can't make a seatbelt out of duct tape (useless mythbusters reference.)

You can use duct tape to hold a trebuchet together though.

It's not very MSE to spend money on duct tape to repair a bag when you can get a new replacement free.

Yes I have swooped over a few bags for life bags at Asda.

Not a bad scheme if you can find a member of staff who can give you the time whilst they are doing 15+ tills at the self serve and they understand what you are trying to ask them to do.

To be honest I think probably most people would just go and buy another bag than put themselves through the rigmarole of getting a bag(s) swapped,.

Unless the duct tape cost him nothing in the first place. ;)
