Data usage

got my first smartphone and was unsure what GB for data to get (got 2GB p/mth)
In 9 days, somehow I have used 15% of this . How ?
I have only ever accessed the internet at home or Wetherspoons, so both free, surely.
The phone does not access the internet itself, when I am away from these 2 places (does it ?) and update things/apps.... so where is the allowance being used ?
thanks

Then turn the data off, in your sync account disable auto sync and set the apps to update via wifi only.

It may be a silly question, but when you are at home or Wetherspoons, are you definitely using wifi?

Then turn the data off,(OFF ? WHERE PLEASE) in your sync account (WHERE IS THIS AND WHAT IS SYNC) disable auto sync and set the apps to update via wifi only.( IS THERE AN OPTION _ WHERE)

You'll have to tell us what smartphone, or consult the manual.

Your phone will use data when you are not connected to a wifi point, depending on how your email is setup it will be using data on its own. Any photos you take may be auto syncing to the cloud, Apple iMessage or google hangouts will be using data. There are plenty of ways it can be using data on its own and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Turn data off is in 2 places, pull the notification bar down on the home screen and one of the buttons should have 2 arrows with the words "mobile data" underneath or go to the settings menu, press "more networks" and then "mobile networks" and the top line is "mobile data", remove the tick from the box.

settings > data usage > mobile data (is set to on)
If I disable it, I wont get updates etc, will I ?

Als - Where is "set to wifi only " ?

Another option is "Allow/do not, background data" ???

if you turn mobile data off - your phone will only connect to the internet when you are on wifi.

The other settings are used to limit what mobile data is used.

This will mean you will not receive emails, updates, messages from things like whatsapp or facebook messenger when you are not at home or connected to a different wifi.

Don't bother, it's unnecessary if mobile data is off.

Your apps and phone can then still sync while on wifi which won't happen if sync is turned off.
