  • That's even odder. I get the first bit, and when I follow it through now I get the option to pick up tickets at the station. However no upgrade option. On the second bit, yours shows the upgrade option, but mine doesn't and the train times and prices are very different to mine. My fare is $120 for the three of us and we go into SF, having selected the option of being dropped off at Union Street.

What date did you put in Molly, and I'll have a go at this end. is it 3 adults, or three adults and a child ? BTW, I priced mine to Emeryville, not Union Square. I have a feeling that your trip is going to be coach, train, coach and taking you inland.

  • It is me and two children, leaving 26 May. It is coach, train, coach. It arrives Emeryville at 4.20 and gets into SF at 5.30. However I am ok with this as I think it will break up the journey a bit and give us a different perspective on the scenery. We are intending travelling light!

That explains a lot - I was pricing it for four people.
Mollybrush, check the route that is being offered to you -- I'm fairly sure that it will take you inland, rather than going on the scenic, pleasant, but sadly very slow route on the Coast.

  • Damn it. I have not found the Amtrak site that easy to navigate. I can't seem to find a map for this other route. I thought it was the Coastal route - it's not that clear. Think I will give them a ring tomorrow. I have spent too long in front of this screen today, it's made me have square eyes. Thanks for all your help. You go over and above what you need to. It is really appreciated.

    Here you go Mollybrush
This is the route for the Coast Starlight, which is the scenic route that will take you up the coast in about 12 hours
and this is the route of the San Joaquims which takes you by coach from LAX (not on the map) to Bakerfield, then train to Emeryville, then coach to San Francisco centre in about 10 hours.

On the train, an adult and 2 children (aged 2-15) comes out at $112(travelling on 26th May) - I couldn't get a first class price for you

Stayed at Humphreys Half Moon Inn and Suites in San Diego in 2006. Had a great time and would recommend.

That's good to know. We've booked to stay here for the last 4 nights of our trip next Easter (2009). Have read mostly good reviews, but the odd one or two dodgy ones - I guess you get that anywhere.

If you're looking at trip advisor or similar then provided the majority are good I don't worry about the odd dodgy one. Some people have some weird expectations or just seem determined to find fault. I've seen comments about hotels I've stayed complaining about facilities that were fine-or better still didn't actually exist :)

    Lucky you:D

San Diego is fab - had 10 days there ourseves last year, though spent a week in La Jolla which is just outside San Diego. I also loved LA - though this is not eveyones cup of tea. Hollywood was fantastic, as was Beverly Hills. Also toured Arizona on a different holiday. We did Utah (Bryce Canyon - wow fantastic) and Arizonah + Las Vegas + Frisco on that holiday. Would defo recommend Bryce Canyon if you havn't thought about it....
....Everything felt dirt cheap when we were there last year.

    Happy holiday
