    Thanks Murphy_The_Cat,

I agree that flying out of San Diego would be less hassle, but I will be booking with Virgin, and I don't think they fly out of San Diego.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I never plan any of my trips passed the arrival and departure airports but then I travel alone so there is nothing and no-one to get in my way.

Just the way I/we used to do it ! We'd have a rough idea of how long we'd like to be in each place, a rough idea of what we'd like to see in each place and holiday accordingly.
But obviously with the children we don't have the same freedom to do that - although oddly enough, it has been VERY pleasurable planning this family friendly holiday so that there is plenty for us all to do.

OK I see. Do you have to go Virgin, or is it a preference and then work around it ?

We did think about it, but not sure if the drive from Lake Havasu to San Diego was just too far to do in one day and also think the few days in San Diego will probably be our chance to 'chill out' at the end of the trip. LA might be a bit too hectic for that.
(We're only stopping in Lake Havasu as it seems to be the best/only place (apart from going back via Las Vegas again) in the Virgin brochure to avoid driving from Grand Canyon to LA in one day!

  • If we are finishing our trip at the Grand Canyon and then wish to fly back to San Francisco what is the best way - Driving back to Las Vegas is about 4 hours and $70 (Virgin) or Phoenix 3 hours and $128 (Southwest) or is there an easier way (definately flying not driving).

could you take your homeward flight from LAS or PHX and miss SFO out ? or are you staying in SFO for a bit --- or take a helictoptor trip from LAS to the GC, go wow a rooney for a while, chopper back to LAS and go to SFO from there. (not a cheap option, but good fun :D)

  • No flying out of SFO so it's not an option.
We've booked to stay one night at the Grand Canyon.
    So not much flexibility really!

This may help some people on USA car hire.

I've used Dollar 3 times now and the price has always been quite reasonable. You can cancel without penalty (as long as you give a few days notice I think) and they don't charge 'one-way' fees between Nevada and California (not sure about other states but worth checking).

I've got a $298 one way fee coming up with Dollar?
