    I don't think that will work here. Those sponges work by using a (very mild) abrasive action, which can be very effective for surface marks on impermeable surfaces but won't work for a mark that's soaked into fabric.

    Try diluted regular cheap thin toilet bleach - a weak solution so it doesn't attack the cotton too readily and keep an eye. Maybe start with one, the oldest/closest to the bin and work backwards. Bleach is pretty amazing and costs pennies for a bottle. Wear marigolds, and wash properly afterwards.

    The pens have stained the fibres, you need to unstain them, which is what bleach does.

    OK, it's not quite in the money-saving spirit, but at least you're providing an income to some vietnamese sweatshops!

    Sparay on some Flash kitchen cleaner with bleach, leave for an hour or so, rinse well and wash as normal. Worked well for me.
