I've always gone with one of the well known company's for this, but have done my homework and there are loads out there.

I want
Homestart
Relay
Recovery
Onward journey

on my policy and some of the other companies are quoting quite a bit lower than my renewal price.

Are they all the same or are there some that you shouldn't touch with a barge pole?

The cheapest one is £37.85 with all the above requirements as opposed to £133 with my current company which doesn't include onward journey or homestart.

I wouldn't touch the AA or RAC with a bargepole due to their 'Rip off existing Customers' policy

Yeah, I'm quite surprised at the renewal cost if I'm being honest. I'm not new to the insurance malarky, but I am new to breakdown cover (since I split with my ex), but now I know to shop around.

Some of the companies I haven't heard of though. The cheapest are one called "Rescue my Car" and "Start."

Why? Customer service? Or assistance at the roadside? The main reason I have breakdown cover is so I have help when I have my kids with me. It's not so bad to try and sort everything out if it's just me.

Thinking about it I suppose it wasn't their fault really but back when I had my first car it broke down and they towed it to a garage that totally !!!!!!ed it up so then I had to find another mechanic to put it right.

The whole incident put me off using them again (and that shoddy garage!)

I'd read the T&Cs very carefully

    If you can get

    Homestart
    Relay
    Recovery &
    Onward journey

For £37.85 a year that is a brilliant price, too good to be true. ;)

(Some companies have stipulations on the age of the car - e.g. 6 months old probably won't break down, so they can offer you everything, 6 years old and they won't take the gamble)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Interesting post. From my experience a 6 year old car is more reliable than a 6 month old one. Mechanical items have quite a high initial failure rate.

Anyone doubting this, lookup up bathtub curve graphs
  • After paying £100+ for 10 years without a call out I was going to not bother last year. If it's just a flat battery or it's not urgent I've either fixed it myself or a look Cal garage will tow it in if it's local.
However I found Start rescue and paid about £75 for joint cover, main car any driver, 2 named drivers in any vehicle. I've had to use them twice this year and both times been impressed with both the contact centre staff and the contracted recovery firms.

    Shocking.

AutoaidBreakdown are now charging £42.35 per year.
Personal cover, including the (legal) spouse. Home start. Recovery. Hotel cost. Caravans & small trailers.

    Shocking.

But if you want European cover too, then Quotelinedirect are somewhat more expensive at £69 (last time I checked).
