ok, my 200gb maxtor drive has passed the smart status but the 80gb wd has failed. Tried running a quick test but stopped after 10 secs or so. Haven't tried the extended test yet says it may take several hours - is it worth doing this overnight or is the drive knackered?

also under the smart test results the drive passes everything but 'raw read error rate'.

At this point the person that sold you it should be nursing a bloody nose, due to having a hard drive thrown off it.Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.0

Yep it's dud -
Before you chuck it, it might still be under warranty. There should be an RMA section on the WD site. Put the serial number in and it should tell you whether the drive is still under warranty. If it is then you can send it back for a replacement. YOu'll have to pay postage to send it but it's better than having a useless drive.0 -
My son had a western digital 80gb which only lasted 3 months. We tried western digitals site and they said if the retailer wouldnt replace it ,to send it back to them (in Malaysia),I looked on ebuyer to find out how much a new one cost and found loads of comments about how that drive was faulty after about 3 months (wierd). We were lucky and he got a replacement from the retailer.Sounds like some rotter decided to pass his dud drive on to you
rather than send it back.

Not covered by WD warranty because 'Product was originally sold to a system manufacturer. Please contact the system manufacturer or the place of purchase for warranty service.'
Bummer

If you can't even do chkdsk /f on it then it definitely sounds as though you've been done.0

if you can get into dos try using the chkdsk /f command. I have used this to fix the same problem on a few hard drives before.
Once this has been done then format as usual, I would recommend doing a full format though rather than a quick one.
Another thing you might be interested in, I use Knoppix a lot for situations like this. It is a live linux distibution than runs off a cd, very very handy. You should give it a try if you haven't heard of it before.
heh, thanks very much for this info about linux. I'm writing this using linux! Its brilliant! Boot from CD and it configures everything automatically......straight on the net without having to alter anything......if only winodws could be this clever...0
