Haggling car costs is hardly new or unusual, dealers will be well aware of this and the onscreen price will include a margin to account for this (or it will if the dealer has an ounce of sense). Obviously the dealer would love to get the full asking price but in most cases will be open to sensible offers.

With rare or exclusive cars they may play hard-ball and hold out for the full asking price, but I'm not sure a Skoda Yeti comes into this category.

If the dealer does agree a discount don't then get suckered into handing it back to pay for some sort of magical polish/coating for an exclusive price of £450 that he will then try and talk you into buying.

When I bought my last used car, a Toyota, I went to a Toyota dealership in Milton Keynes, probably with over 100 used cars, so you would expect that at least they would have a handle on their sales force. I had booked with one salesman (that had told me that it had had a single driver - even if the owner was Enterprise rent a car). When I got there on time, he said he was busy. We found that the car was in fact a rental car. They gave a rushed apology, but clearly had no penalty for deceiving.

Having driven a bit, we stayed on. They then went on to say that their internet was down, etc, could not check much info, etc, so could not easily check for other cars. But we were immediately offered another car - they were discounting it for 800 they said, considering the confusion we had, etc. We did not pursue it much since a few things did not seem right with the place. When we checked the car a few mins later online, we noticed that its normal price was over 1500 lower than the sticker that they put on it.

This made me very wise when dealing with these types. ;-) If these people can keep getting away with this, what would others be able to....

So I assume you would be happy to lose £800?

At that price there is not much profit margin in that Skoda.

Would the OP accept less right to complain about things? Or less right to reject? What about less right to have buyers remorse in 2 months time?

If you want to pay nearly £1000 less then go to an auction.

A quick check of Motorpoint shows 2015 models for around the same money, CarGiant has some older ones for around £12k.

After overheads the original dealer might only have £1500 profit in that car at most, though probably less.

You mention of getting money off a car is not hugely relevant as that car could have been in stock for months, they might have got it at a stupidly low price or it could simply have been overpriced massively to start with.

Everybody here days has access easily to prices of similar cars Nationwide.

I doubt a dealer will struggle to sell a popular car like a Skoda Yeti.

But you really think a dealer would consider taking a loss or making next to nothing on a popular car that they hold in stock? They are more likely to sell it within the trade.

How exactly does losing money make you profitable?

Have you ever run a Garage?

I have. We didn't sell huge number of cars as we were primarily a workshop and bodyshop with used cars being a sideline and getting them ready for sale kept the staff busy when the workshop or bodyshop was quiet.

Would I ever consider selling a car for little or no profit as I might make it up on something else?

Well, no, that is daft. As I would still have to prepare it for sale and give the same statutory rights as I give a customer in a car I made money on.

You do realise that a dealer doesn't have to accept an offer by a customer?. Your ranting on like they have to accept any price they are offered. First you posted that there was no way they could take £800 off the price. Then I gave an example of how I got a much bigger discount on a car. So there is no way for you to know how much profit is in the car or how much they bought it for even based on prices of similar cars.

I will add that garages seem much less willing to haggle, with so many cars being visible online it makes comparing prices very easy - so they (usually) price them aggressively in the first place.
They generally expect you to haggle, but you will have less scope the farther away you are from where you live....

When buying a car from a Toyota official reseller, I was asked to book an appointment and that included giving address details. They already knew that we had to drive a significant amount to get there.
It is then easy for a non scrupulous reseller to change arrangements on arrival (like put you with anyone that does not know what was agreed, etc) and you have less scope to haggle.
The other case is when they trick you into paying a deposit "because it may be sold just as you drive to us". At that stage, despite all assurances it is refundable, it is probably hard to get it back and you can no longer haggle.

Bigj gave a fair assessment of how it works but got shot down

This yeti is a rare car to find and demands a premium to buy even at auction, the dealers who sell them are more interested in selling on a finance package than taking shoe boxes of money from ireland as they possibly gave at auction what the car is retailing for as the monies in the deal done at the desk, not at sticker price.
To the guy? who got 800 knocked off a £4000 mota well done:rotfl:you obviously bought the dealers landmark,i have one of these had it 8 months now and i would be more than happy just to get my original purchase money back never mind the cost of the land its taken up in parking, a new mot ,refurbishment and probably a thousand gallons of tap water to keep the thing from growing wings

Well that car was sold before I even got the chance to deprive the salesman's children of their dinner for that week.

But I bought another. It was actually well priced comparing same models / mileage / age from Autotrader across the country. Was £12k and managed to get £500 off and a spare wheel kit worth £250 thrown in also. So not too bad, could have maybe got more, but car was well priced to start with so happy enough !
