Used car discount

Hi,
Just wondering what discount I could get on a car I'm going to look at.
It's a 2014 Yeti Elegance with 22k miles, priced at £14800.
Could I expect to get the £800 knocked off ?! Don't like the haggling game, was wanting just to go in with an offer of £14k take it or leave it kind of thing.
Cheers !

Do your research on autotrader and the like. Find out what the real market value is, then offer that.0

hi mark, please don't slam the door on the way out
thanks0 -
glasses online free valuation will give you a trade in value, Glass guide used to be considered THE market guide so should give you an idea of what they paid for it...0

If you want to get it for nearly a thousand pounds less than advertised then go to auction and take the same chances the dealer had to.
Then you will see that the profit margin on that far is not as high as you seem to think it is.
Would you, for example, take half wages one week if a customer decided to tell you to "take it or leave it"
Or would you explain you have fixed and variable costs and don't come to work for fun?0 -

It's only a 5% discount which isn't that much. It all depends on how it's priced. I've gotten almost £800 off a car that was priced at £3800 from a garage.
Your analogy using the wages isn't a very good comparison!. A car dealer will have more than one car for sale so if they reduce the price to move it they can still sell other cars to make money!.0 -
So I assume you would be happy to lose £800?
At that price there is not much profit margin in that Skoda.
Would the OP accept less right to complain about things? Or less right to reject? What about less right to have buyers remorse in 2 months time?
If you want to pay nearly £1000 less then go to an auction.
A quick check of Motorpoint shows 2015 models for around the same money, CarGiant has some older ones for around £12k.
After overheads the original dealer might only have £1500 profit in that car at most, though probably less.
You mention of getting money off a car is not hugely relevant as that car could have been in stock for months, they might have got it at a stupidly low price or it could simply have been overpriced massively to start with.
Everybody here days has access easily to prices of similar cars Nationwide.
I doubt a dealer will struggle to sell a popular car like a Skoda Yeti.
But you really think a dealer would consider taking a loss or making next to nothing on a popular car that they hold in stock? They are more likely to sell it within the trade.
How exactly does losing money make you profitable?
Have you ever run a Garage?
I have. We didn't sell huge number of cars as we were primarily a workshop and bodyshop with used cars being a sideline and getting them ready for sale kept the staff busy when the workshop or bodyshop was quiet.
Would I ever consider selling a car for little or no profit as I might make it up on something else?
Well, no, that is daft. As I would still have to prepare it for sale and give the same statutory rights as I give a customer in a car I made money on.0 -
Jesus there's some stupid replies here.
Loosing wages..loosing rights to complain..sounds like a board full of bitter car dealers!0 -
Oh dear, look at all this fighting !
Checked autotrader and there are two a year younger with half the miles for same price. I'm in NI tho and generally used car prices here are higher due to lack of choice.
It's 5% discount, googling other forums saying go for 5-10% and most seem to have got it. Depends in what they buying and all that of course. So I didn't think 5% was too much out of the question.
I know the salemen have their hairgel and tight trousers to pay for (some in here I think) so wanted to make a fair offer.0 -
Drama...
Offer how much you want to pay OP, if the dealer wants to accept it he can, if he doesn't, then he won't. Simples.
I will add that garages seem much less willing to haggle, with so many cars being visible online it makes comparing prices very easy - so they (usually) price them aggressively in the first place. But it never hurts to ask, and if they take your offer it's not like you've taken food from their kids plates, it's their choice.0 -
You should be able to get the 5% knocked off as usually the markup on dealer vehicles is at least 10%0
