Why have Plusnet informed me they will charge me £30 for transferring my phone line to a non BT provider eg Virgin or Sky I thought they had to transfer your service out of contract for free

It's not a transfer charge, it's the OR cease charge. If you move to VM then your BT line is redundant, with Sky it should be a transfer to LLU so not chargeable.
The outgoing provider doesn't have to transfer anything for free, all they have to do is end your contract without an ETC if you are out of minimum term.
Your PN contract doesn't expire or renew, if you do nothing it continues as before until you give 30 days notice. However the price may go up if you are on a limited term discounted rate.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hi, hope you can help, just to clarify when is the best time to start a switch to avoid any early exit fees, would that be 10 days before my contract ends or can I start earlier or is it best to wit till the contract ends?

    Thanks in advance :)

Contract does not end and no service .
It moves to a 30 day rolling contract .
I would contact your New ISP and sign up about the 10- 14 day mark before your contract ends . Changeover within your contract = no loss and if it runs over then it will be a months payment.

Your service should cancel with your old provider and start with the new provider on the same day with a short downtime.

That's what *should* happen, but if internet access is crucial, do build in a contingency plan for downtime just in case.

In my case there were complications, which were never fully explained, and I had downtime of around 5 weeks.

As it happened I was away from home for most of that time, so it didn't matter much, but in the normal course of events it would have been a major inconvenience, to put it mildly.
