Advice from stove installers please

An internet friend of mine has just been diagnosed with a blood clot, her husband's being treated for blood clots in both lungs, when she was diagnosed this week, I started worrying about carbon monoxide poisoning, which I mentioned to her.
She had her gas boiler & fire checked yesterday which was ok but she has said that her neighbours installed their own log burner & "the chimney comes straight into our gas air vent at the side of the house." The gas engineer said she needs to speak to the environment agency but she's scared of upsetting the neighbours & doesn't want to tell her husband, as he'll go mad.
Maybe I'm being neurotic about it but it seems very strange that they both have blood clots at the same time for no seemingly apparent reason. I don't know if the hospital or Dr will have checked their blood oxygen levels.
Does anyone know if there could be enough fumes coming in from next doors flue or chimney to be causing a serious level of carbon monoxide
