One Year Old Car Not Reliable - Contract Hire

Given that the last list price for a Defender 90 station wagon was £25k, or £23k for a pickup, you're not going to get much of a house for that. Even a 110XS was only £33k.
A deposit on a house plus the monthly running costs.
£25k deposit and £400/month will buy a reasonable house.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

No, I'd rather buy a house with the money than pay new prices for a LandRover.
However, the rate they go through replacement parts I doubt if it matters much
They happily do starship mileages, but you've replaced half the running gear by then, whereas the pre- 2003 LandCruisers would do the same mileage with just oil changes and new tyres.
I do know someone who bought an 03 Freelander new, the ones where they suffered from abs computer failure, it had two under warranty, and had to go when it went the third time.
I don't think the viscous coupler had gone though
So your opinion is based on buying used ones that could have been neglected and abused?
Did JLR make the ABS ECU? And did the make the Viscous Coupler?
So you are blaming JLR for things caused by a 3rd party supplier.
Still no answer from the OP regards how he got around when his vehicle was in for repair.
As I can guarantee he was given a vehicle within a short period of time.0 -
I am surprised such a poor vehicle was made for so long.
In fact I am even more surprised that the Defender is not actually going out of production but rather production is doing a "Beetle" and simply being moved, at least that is the very firm rumour I have heard.
Let's be honest the entire vehicle production lines for LDV vans and trucks where sold to China, the Chinese Maxus is already in production and is likely to be imported to the UK.
Let's not forget that the biggest failing with the Maxus was the engine, which was bought from VM and was also fitted to Voyagers, Cherokees and London Taxis.
But only got a bad reputation in the Maxus and TX4. Can't be the way the vehicles are treated and neglected, nope, or indeed VM's fault, nope. Let's blame LDV.
There is something basically wrong with many people in the UK, they love to attack things made in Britian but defend foreign produced vehicles to the hilt.
Have always thought that was weird.0 -
They are a constant source of frustration. This is my second one and the other was just as bad. I never learn.
Land Rover did bend over backwards (as opposed to me bending over forwards) to keep me in a vehicle the whole time that my Defender has been in their workshop and it is for that reason that I will stay with them as a customer. I even took the time to write to the head office to commend them on the job they did during the engine replacement.
I don't think focusing on the engine replacement scenario is the answer to my problem though. It's the bigger picture of the constant repairs and returns to the workshop that's is the cause for concern. It is not possible to run a business with such an unreliable vehicle and as such I need to get out of the contract hire, lest my business goes to the wall.0 -
So what does your CH contract say about early termination, given that the root cause of the unreliability is not through an inherent fault with the vehicle.0

Why would you not blame them? You can outsource production but not responsiblity!...

If you could select the make of ECU when you bought a new car, you might have a point.0 -
Nothing obvious. Maybe there's something in there that will be applicable, but I'll be damned if I can translate the legalese. I suppose that this must be a fairly rare scenario. But let's get something straight. The car was returned to the workshop many times before the engine replacement AND after. It's a general unreliability, not just something stemming from the contaminated fuel problem.0
