Noisy renovations, how much warning or notice would you give, if any?

I'm just wondering if others usually inform adjoined neighbours of major oncoming work, involving knocking, hammer drills etc.

Presumably it's not necessary to provide notice of putting up a few pictures or blinds, but it might in the case of refitting a bathroom or kitchen and certainly the entire house. Note, I'm purely referring to work within legal hours without need for planning permission, and concerning adjoined neighbours only.

Sorry the third option should be between a week and month.

    House - Nothing
Terraced house/Flat - Yes I would ask the neighbours who would have an adjoining wall about their hours of sleep, if they are night shift workers and need to sleep in the morning or afternoon and try and work around that.

We had a garden makeover last year for my disabled son. Although it was only two days work, there were a lot of volunteers and delivery trucks. The charity gave us letters to post through neighbours doors about a month before. I also knocked and spoke to the neighbours.

It wasn't noisy, but additional traffic one residential street can be disruptive.

I would drop a note through their door to say you are doing work on the house and hope its not too much on an inconvenience. I wouldnt notify of each episode.

If it is within reasonable working hours 8am-7pm (I think the law states 9pm!) then none..

We were refitting the kitchen until the wee small hours for 3 weeks and spent many nights until 1am sanding walls in one room.. the neighbours were students and if it didnt wake my children that was a good indicator of volume I thought.

If your friendly with them maybe mention it but I'd not bother otherwise if you are not going to be working all night.

We would let our neighbours know of any disruption we were likely to cause. I even warned my neighbour when we were getting a puppy as we were worried about him howling at night, I buttered her up with a bottle of wine. She isn't very friendly and never warns us if she's getting anything done, but that's up to her, I can't be like that. Bit annoying that she knows my oh works night shift and her partner decides to make alterations to his work van right.outside our bedroom window, no consideration what so ever grr

I would mention it and my closest neighbour does too. It is reassuring to know the strange people going in and out are legitimate and when noise starts up it is nice to know it is only for a short while.

Must admit I'd be less than thrilled if my neighbours were doing DIY til 1am for three weeks - whether I was a student or not would be irrelevant -although if I was trying to study I think I'd be even less impressed.

Frankly working til that hour for weeks just sounds completely selfish and inconsiderate and you were probably quite fortunate no-one complained to the council.

How big is your kitchen that it took three weeks working til 1 am to get it all done....or were you only working on it during anti-social hours ?

My neighbours decided to start drilling at 9 o'clock on a Saturday night, we just cranked our TVs right up, they didn't do that again

I expect to be building a small extension in the next 12-18 months. Once I've got the PP approved and a start date sorted I'll go door-knocking/leaflet dropping all my neighbours to let them know.
For the direct next door neighbour most likely to be affected by noise/mess I'll be popping round weekly to check there's no mess and that they're not being inconvenienced.... I'll probably also introduce the builder to her and tell her to have a moan at them if there's anything annoying going on. I'd also say in front of her/the builder that she's to go to him at any time she's annoyed ....so they both know I said it and so feel comfortable with each other.

I might additionally stick a note on my gate saying "If some 4rse has parked in your space, he might be working here - please feel free to enter and rip him a new one."
