Just to mention £60 sterling EACH means €155 per night at today's rates, so all is not lost. That is doable in Dublin but maybe not in the city centre at weekends, although there are deals around. You have to keep checking.

Like any capital city it is not cheap accommodation wise at any time, there are concerts, conventions, hens, stags, multiple EU and US visitors all the time, so it can be a crowded place when looking for a bargain. But you will get one!

Please look again at the Generator hostels. I have no connection with them honest. But lots of people I know have stayed there and loved it.

Otherwise you have to stay outside the city on a good transport link. That can be a pain too, since you are stuck with the timetable. Taxis can be a bit expensive depending on the mileage.

Also be aware of where you are staying. There are hotels just North of O'Connell Street that sound great and cheap, but the areas may not be the best late at night. Same for every city. Get your ball bearings first!

I've been to Dublin a few times over the years and always stayed in a hostel called Abbey Court http://abbey-court.com/

Excellent place and great location- stayed in a dorm with a couple of mates for my 30th and twice with my wife in one of the double rooms- which although small have an ensuite and are perfectly adequate. Looking at their website now I see that they do apartments too

I stayed at Generator Hostel last time. No problem with it.

  • Just an update for you.

We had a conversation where I said I was fed up trying to fit in her criteria and that she should look for the accommodation instead of leaving it to me.

I pointed out generator hostel and she was having a fit about it - I think a lot of it has to do with her new fella tbh. I've explained to her that its a private room, you have your own bathroom, there's no difference between that and a hotel AND

She finally agreed and we've booked there (I think she realised she was being silly!)

    Thanks for all the advice

Hi I live just outside Dublin. Travelodge Rathmines is in a great location, inexpensive too. The West County hotel mentioned above is also good, and only twenty minutes by bus to the city.

Now don't scream.... but the Generator brand of hostels gets great reviews and they have private en suite rooms at a very reasonable price. They are in Smithfield which is only a ten minute walk to Temple Bar for example. Check it out before dismissing it! It is very popular for the prices and location.

Anyway, I think you will just have to trawl the hotel sites and put in your price and see what comes up. Dublin is not a cheap place to stay at any time now, but especially at weekends. Avoid Bank holidays too if you can. But you will have a great time!

A big tip. Get one of these... unlimited travel on all modes within the city/suburban zone and includes the 747 bus to and from the airport aswell. Amazing value. You can choose the number of days you want it for.

Hope you have a great time. Get booking soon, accommodation in Dublin is at a premium all year round now.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU so much Melanzana for your tips - We did stay at the Generator and it was fantastic. The Leap card came in so much use as well.

Do you really mean £60 each or £120 per room per night ?

(or do you need two rooms?)

If your budget is £120 per room per night take a look at the North Star, clean, central and right opposite the railway station- not luxurious but is an easy stroll to O'Connell Street and buses and trams stop right outside.

I wouldn't recommend the North Star

I stayed here in November last year and the fire alarm went off about 5 times in the night

In the morning when i checked I said i was disappointed that no-one came around asking / checking the corridors and people were confused and could do anything about the disturbance eg breakfast or discount for a future booking

They said they it was unruly / drunken guests and not their fault and weren't prepared to offer anything but a manager would call me later

I am still waiting for that call and have been back to other places in Dublin 5 times since and not had a problem

Obviously they don't need repeat custom ;)
