Accommodation in Dublin

Hi,

Me and a friend plan on heading to Dublin for a weekend away but struggling to find accommodation.

We want to stay near the city (or at least, be able to get there easy enough!) and dont want to pay over £60 each per night.

We've found a lot of accommodations in our budget are hostels. I personally have no issues in staying there but my friend point blank refuses to consider these.

Can anyone suggest somewhere to stay?

The pound is weaker against the Euro at the moment and this may be having an effect on the perception of hotel value for money, this will also have an impact on how far your spending money would go during the trip.

When are you hoping to go? As that can affect prices a lot I have been looking recently for early July and considered Best Western Sheldon Park - near a LUAS stop and cheaper because it's further out. We settled on West County Hotel by Phoenix park with a bus stop outside and are paying £110 for a night's dinner bed and breakfast.
Check out bed and breakfasts too
I would recommend checking the hotel/hostel's own sites as they sometimes have better deals than going through the third party sites

I'd hand the task of booking somewhere suitable within your budget over to your friend. :D

Have you trawled through the booking websites - laterooms, booking.com etc?
  • I did think about leaving it up to her 😉

I think staying further out but near a train stop is probably what will happen.

We go may so not long to sort something!

Hi I live just outside Dublin. Travelodge Rathmines is in a great location, inexpensive too. The West County hotel mentioned above is also good, and only twenty minutes by bus to the city.

Now don't scream.... but the Generator brand of hostels gets great reviews and they have private en suite rooms at a very reasonable price. They are in Smithfield which is only a ten minute walk to Temple Bar for example. Check it out before dismissing it! It is very popular for the prices and location.

Anyway, I think you will just have to trawl the hotel sites and put in your price and see what comes up. Dublin is not a cheap place to stay at any time now, but especially at weekends. Avoid Bank holidays too if you can. But you will have a great time!

A big tip. Get one of these... unlimited travel on all modes within the city/suburban zone and includes the 747 bus to and from the airport aswell. Amazing value. You can choose the number of days you want it for.

Hope you have a great time. Get booking soon, accommodation in Dublin is at a premium all year round now.
  • I honestly wouldn't mind a hostel, I've seen some nice ones in my time, its my stuck up friend whose turning her nose up haha

Thanks for the tip on travelling!
  • That LEAP travel pass looks superb value.

I would seriously consider staying further out as travelling on the DART rail system is so easy.

Nearly 20 years since I went, so others will be more up to date.

I stayed right out at Howth, a separate coastal village as I had an ancestral connection (gggrandfather was the lighthouse keeper there!).

It was still only 20 mins on the DART to central Dublin; last train back seems to leave Dublin Connelly just after 23.00.

    Worth considering?

Having said that, there doesn't seem to be much accommodation in Howth itself.

I think your friend needs to get real:
Hotel Accommodation in Central Dublin is very expensive.
Weekends are expensive: it's a very popular weekend destination.
May is therefore too close for a bargain - everywhere reasonable is fully booked by now.

Your options for your budget are:

    - hostels
    - airbnb? ( I haven't searched). Again tho, weekends likely to be booked up.
    - B&B further out
    - be prepared to pay more?
    - defer to a weekend in September, which might not yet be so booked up?
    - mid-week instead? I like the look of this in Howth, within your budget, at £349 for the two of you Mon-Thurs http://www.booking.com/hotel/ie/king-sitric.en-gb.html?label=gen171DCAEoggJCAlhYSDNiBW5vcmVmaFCIAQOYAS64AQfIAQ3YAQPoAQGoAgM
but there will be lots more choice closer to the centre mid-week as well of course.

I think you friend is being unreasonable and I would certainly ask her to sort it out if she wasn't happy with the hostal I researches and suggested!

Do you really mean £60 each or £120 per room per night ?

(or do you need two rooms?)

If your budget is £120 per room per night take a look at the North Star, clean, central and right opposite the railway station- not luxurious but is an easy stroll to O'Connell Street and buses and trams stop right outside.

I felt the same way about hostels until i stayed in one in Dublin. I went on a hen weekend, we all stayed at Kinlay House, I loved it and would go back again. All you need is a bed and a shower, I'd definitely stay there again.
