Bit of an update: first 2 payments were as outlined in last years confirmation, which was different to last year - then the RTI seemed to stop payments from day one.
Just logged in to start my self assessment, and found the assumed earnings for tax credits for 16/17 were joint of 38k (from RTI) instead of £29.5 given last year. The next payment is scheduled to be £27 instead of £322!

I updated 16/17 income to £30k, so once processed this years claim will be recalculated on £32.5k until renewal. When it will be based on 28.5k. This is last year real joint income and 30 is within the 2.5k disregard.

Does the above sound about right?

One more question, I updated both our 16/17 incomes and wife's hours and it stated changes submitted. However once logged out and back on the old data returns and nothing suggesting any changes have been submitted. Does this online system work, or should I call them?

I'd check again in a week or so. The online system seems to give different people different things - I was helping someone with their renewal the other day and she submitted it OK, got a receipt - but when she logged in a few days later it was still asking her to do the renewal! Also she can't see her payment schedule, what income their using, or any of that sort of information which other people can see.

This happened to us last year- I carefully worked out our incomes after SMP and my husband having multiple jobs and then they disregard everything you said! Why don't they ask for your working out so that if there is a discrepancy they can check and see the deductions?

I didn't realise you could remove gift aid donations though! I have a few DDs set up so will remember to remove that this year.

I've never removed my pension before either - I'll do that too

I have a similar problem. I work from home so have allowable expenses which I deduct. It seems to cause them headaches every year because of the discrepancy, and I was told this year that I'd probably need to sign something to say why my income is actually lower than the RTI info they have (I had to deal with Concentrix last year because of this, so I'm hoping it's just a letter as I lost the will to live by the end of it). I received my renewal a couple of weeks ago and renewed over the phone. I've checked my entitlement online afterwards and they are paying me a less than they should be so I'm assuming there's problems again. I can't do anything until they send me the paperwork.

Deduct work expenses, pension, gift aid and some of your gas and electricity if you work from home. If you work from home and you need to go to the office for a meeting/training, you can deduct this too (but not if your work reimburse you). My employer refunds my broadband charges so I don't deduct this, but if you work from home and you need it and your employer doesn't refund then you are allowed to deduct a reasonable percentage depending on how much you use it for work. If you're self employed you are allowed to deduct more, but it's best to see an accountant (the cost of which you can deduct!).

If your expenses are under £2,500 a year you can fill in a P87 and they will refund your expenses by altering your tax code. Doesn't help with Tax credits though, but it saves you the problem of filling in a tax return; https://public-online.hmrc.gov.uk/lc/content/xfaforms/profiles/forms.html?contentRoot=repository:///Applications/PersonalTax_iForms/1.0/P87&template=P87_en_1.2.3.xdp
