Before this programme was shown there were reports that it was less than "honest":-

"Programme-makers have admitted that the programme was filmed on a specially created tip and that contestants were given generous food rations.
Yeah you could see that in that there was ideally placed things for them to utilise, not that did effectively!
In the pre-recorded series, which will be broadcast from Sunday, one contestant even asks for food rations to be cut because the challenge is too easy.
Ah but they did say he had been expecting a more army survival type of challenge and that was why

Producers of the show, dubbed Stig Brother - after the children's book Stig of the Dump - have also revealed that the "dump" was actually purpose-built 100 yards from a real landfill site and that some of the refuse on it had been sourced from other tips.
After going to work with my stepfather I know how dangerous landfill sites can be, so can totally understand why they wouldn't want them roaming around on a real municipal one ;)

Channel 4 said that it would have been too dangerous for the contestants to live on the main landfill dump because hazardous gases and waste could have killed them.
Health and safety rules also meant that contestants were not allowed to scavenge for food.

Participants were nevertheless surprised at the largesse of TV bosses, who gave them £424 worth of food between them each week."
But that was to highlight the amount of food that the average adult throws away per year, and that it could feed the whole group for a week

    Really realistic !
I think with a project like this, where H&S is going to narrow the parameters, you'll always have problems making a realistic experience, I think they've done as much as they can, the machines that are used on landfill sites are VERY dangerous and you can't have people scavenging around you while you're trying to work - although that happens in other countries I know, but our H&S and claim culture doesn't allow it.

Personally I think the programme highlighted a some really good points, will have to see more of it though to form a more informed opinion. I was stunned by the bloke with his fresh boxers everyday, not sure if that was just bravado or something  but certainly wasn't impressed when he hadn't seen anything bad enough to shock him into recycling more back at home :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

    thought the show was naff.

of course, they couldn't live on a real dump, because of rats and the diseases hat they carry. the eco-guy was aggressive and unsupportive.

they should just hold up a sign saying "look at us daft greenys" and be done with it.

i like the 'wasters' prog instead!
LOL but they weren't all greenies :confused::confused:

  • Watched some of it and thought it more like Big Brother in a ready made tip rather than a ready made house. As usual there are people put in the group to cause aggravation etc. cos that's what will make "good" TV. Could have been a good idea to show how people could reuse stuff and those who had different views were involved in a debate. But it seems like the point of some people being there is to claim the prize at the end which I believe is £20K?

Maybe a show were people use stuff thrown away to improve their own homes/lives would be a good idea?
  • What a load of c**p.
You really think anybody would be allowed to live on a tip !!!
If you want to watch this sort of TV go right ahead I dont even think about watching the rubbish !!!!!!!!
    Save some electric peeps !!!!!!!!!!!

A better show is The Buchanans, last night, I think BBC 3
A little bit of show acting but informative. They were sent camping to a correction farm. Couldn't believe the electricity target for when they got back to their own house. 1000Watts per day for a family of four.
From 3 cars to one plus a bike. Simple stuff tho compared to this forum.

the shows main point is the unsustainable amount of rubbish that we create and the amount of things we use and then dump because we have updated them ie pc's , phones etc .
if manufacturers were taxed on the amount of rubbish their products produced we might see a significant decrease of the amount of packaging used .

What happened at the end? I fell asleep just after they had the rubbish 'delivered' that some of them had collected. Whilst it wasn't such a riveting show that I will never get over what happened at the end (hey, I fell asleep!), I'm still curios as to who got the prize money and what they had to do with the dustcart load of rubbish.
  • They had to sift through the rubbish and sort it out into various skips. It was disgusting rubbish and they all felt sick with the smell etc. They were let off this task after 2 hours.

They sold more rubbish making £130 odd which went towards buying food and drink for a party that night and they had to dress up in clothing found on the dump... personally I thought that was a bit gross.

As they were getting ready to leave a bus arrived with all their friends and family so they could show them round the dump and then they all went home and I don't remember the money ever being mentioned.

The woman who thought of herself as the most green person there, actually came 4th because she drove a 3.5l 4x4 (even though it was converted to run on LPG). She drove 500 miles a week. Talk about being a hypocrite.

I was surprised the part-time model stuck it out, and that bloke who sounded like a girl. :)
