"could not send" error message when trying to send txt

I phoned a business colleague on his mobile and was a bit surprised to get an professional answering service person who said he was with a client and would call me back. But hey i thought he must be doing well. Anyway as i had to go out myself i thought I would send him a short text message . Only it will not send - I get a"could not send" error message.

I know I have the right number. My phone is working fine - I checked with a couple of test messages. Now I am wondering if maybe he is away and has turned off his sms. From memory he has an iPhone. I have an Android. Can you turn off the text messaging on an iPhone and if so would i then get a"could not send" message if i sent him a text.

As your call to him was intercepted by an answering service could this be the reason that texts will not send?
And normally if a phone is turned off then texts are held in the system until the phone re-connects to the network.

Just a thought, this wasn't an 070xx personal number rather than a true 07xxx mobile? That would explain the answering service and the inability to sms.
