It's currently at halfords so will be getting it towed to an independent garage ASAP. ITS A 61 plate Vauxhall corsa. She's had it for the past two years. She's now saying if he has it repaired she will continue to pay the finance but obviously she can't be trusted. I've told him if that's what he decides she needs to sort her own finance. It still doesn't seem fair but at least he won't be left with everything. I also wonder though if he got it fixed how much he would get for it? Could he repay the finance himself and maybe recoup some money back for the repairs.?
Thanks again I will keep you informed of the outcome

Not the 1.0 engine is it?

Did she neglect oil changed or oil level and the chain snapped or jumped a tooth?

For £1700 I would pay it off and park it up whilst saving up for repairs.

A 61plate Corsa is still worth a fair few thousand. Model dependant it could be worth as much as £5/6000, though I suspect it is a lower spec model popular with younger drivers, but still probably £4000.

At least you now know the true character of the cousin. A painful lesson and worse when it is family.

I bet she would (say it, that is!)

Either sell it 'as is' on ebay, or repair and sell. The latter is probably better, depending on what the independent garage say.

I see your problem now. Take it to a GARAGE where mechanics work and report back.

Has she been insuring it? Or was she driving on his insurance? Just curious ...

Actually I think it would help in determining the degree of recklessness of the cousin, which would help us to advise whether to be lenient or tough with her.

As my post said, I was just curious. Don't assume that I'm going to attack.
