Powergen Staywarm
We have been with Staywarm since 2001, in June we will be paying the new price of £57.32 a month (last year it was £49.85)
We spend at least three months of the year abroad now, March, October, January and two weeks in June. We do leave the gas central heating just ticking over very low, we have low energy bulbs in the lights which are programmed to come on in the evening. So we can't be using very much gas and electric at all when we are away.
They have just estimated that we have used 3545.04 kw hours of electricity and 55582.55 kw hours of gas. this seems very high
April 2004 estimate 1283 kw elecricity and 17836 gas, from readings between July and January
How, apart from monitoring our consumption each month, can we find out if we would save money by changing to another supplier ?

Try this power company, they are a fair trade supplier and probably the cheapest:

the quoted 'average' UK estimated usage is 3,300kwh of electricity and 20,500kwh of gas per annum, so your estimated electricity consumption is pretty average but should not match the consumption you describe, and the gas is very very high, nearly 3 times the average consumption. Now Sacked British Gas Employee (Broken arm gets you the sack at BG)0

I phoned Staywarm today and apparently the consumption figures are way out and have been calculated wrongly, we were told that a lot of other people got wrong amounts quoted too.
The correct figures are 2238 Electricity and 28528 Gas
The person at Staywarm gave me the number of Powergen to get a quote, they quoted me £620.94 to go with Powergen TXU as opposed to paying £687.54 to Staywarm, of course it's an unknown quantity each month, we could gain or lose. and we are only talkng about £5.55 difference each month.
I did some comparisons online and we won't save all that much if we move, so for now we will stay with Staywarm.0 -
I carried out the same exercise. When I rang Staywarm, the lady I spoke to told me that our fuel measurements for the year was:
Electric: 8,425 KWH
Gas : 13,850 KWH
We live in a 2 bedroomed apartment. Our service charges include 24 hr hot water, so we do not pay for that. We are in London and prices are higher here.
I thought it sounded on the high side, but how could I argue?
So it turned out that moving would not save us any money and we will be charged £62.57 per month as from 1st June. Quite a bit of money....

If STAYWARM overestimate your consumption it is quite likely that they have put you on a high user tariff.
I would check with them and see if this is the case. If so, ask them how long you have been on that tariff. If your actual consumption means you should not be on this tariff you should ask them for a refund0 -
We have been on Staywarm for the past 18 months.
I keep a record of useage on the first of every month.
We live in a detached 3 bedroom house and their are two of us.
The charge for this property is now £60.68 pm.( last year it was £52.00pm).ie now £728.16 PA.
I have calculated our usage 01/06/04 to 31/05/05, (Electricity 3257 Kwh, and 578 cu/ft of gas.ie 18091 Kwh
By my calculations, (the gas is the tricky one to calculate Is their anyone good at maths to tell me how many KW/hrs of gas 578 cu/ft of gas represents.) help from another moneysaver has enabled me to work out the Gas kwh (its 18091)
The total comes to £550.00 approx. somewhat less than the £728,
I will contact staywarm and see what they say.0 -
Try this for gas to kWh
http://www.ukpower.co.uk/staywarm.asp
Staywarm is not billed on units used it is estimated on number of bedrooms
how many people live in the house and post code. They use this method for a fixed monthly payment.0 -
