Just checking in the forum. I am looking at my meter readings for gas and elec usage.

My elec reading in particular is concerning me. I live in a 4 bed house, 4 adults. Gas boiler.

I read the gas meter three days ago and by my calculations i have used 305 units in just three days. This equates to £250.00 pw!!!

Tell me does that sound like a problem with my boiler or not?!

You say the elec reading is concerning but then go onto talk about gas - I've presumed you meant to say the gas is concerning. The below message only impacts gas readings.

With gas you can't take a a straight reading from the meter, you need to convert the units shown on the meter into kWhs. The meter reading concerns the volume of gas that has come through the meter, this needs to be converted to the amount of energy (kWhs) in the volume of gas.

You need to figure out if your meter is recording in ft3 or m3 (ft of m should be shown somewhere by the readout.

If your meter is f3 use this:
    http://www.energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion_feet.html

As you've got 5 numbers in your reading you should have a Metric meter so use the link below

If your meter is m3 use this:
    http://www.energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion_meters.html

This metric into kWhs will uplift your reading by around a factor of 10 so something doesn't look right! 350 in m3 amounts to ~4,000 kWhs.

Were both readings taken by yourself and are either of them estimated reads?

Two meter readings a couple of days apart mean very little. I would check the meter reading on my last bill: you may have misread the 6 in the first reading. Easily done.

So just got of the phone, what a nightmare.

First of all reading convered between Feb last year and Feb this year in terms of Kw is 38009 (12 months usage)

Reading for usage for last three days is 2808

I have just spent two and half hours on the phone to Scottish Power to come out and check my boiler (as i have boiler cover with them) They a) never answer the phone b) dont understand what i am saying c) drop calls and make you start all over again d) promise to call back and dont.

Bottom line. They wont touch it, so i have had to call the national grid to come out and look at it. Its snowing, and cold and now i have no heating because i had to turn it all off. I KNOW i cant smell gas, there is a problem with the boiler, but Scottish Power refuse to touch it. So now heres the thing, Another day to get the national grid out, another day trying to get hold of Scottish power, and another day poss!! for them to come and service my boiler. Now it looks like next week to me.

I am really upset just now. This is daft. :(

are you sure it wasn't start 59542

could you see the full digit, easy to misread 3 and 5 if only the bottom of the digit is visible.

You need to take a deep breath. Ignore kWhs, What were your actual meter readings in February last year and now? If you provide the two meter readings and confirm that the front of the meter states that it is a Metric meter, then advice is available.

When this is resolved then remember to check your meter at least once per month. A 99p app called Meters will do all the sums and tell you how much you owe since your last bill. Like the suppliers though, it does need actual meter readings to work.

PS. The problem is unlikely to be your boiler. You would know if it was on constantly.
