mobile phone turning WiFi on by itself?
Comments

I have mobile data off and only use free wifi and still get a few days of power before needing to charge it again. If you find you need to charge more regularly than that you either have heavy usage or the issue is with the quality of the phone and you should consider getting a better phone if you can afford it and are not happy with the current situation.0

Of course. That's the whole point of the setting.
But, as I said, it doesn't prevent other devices from tracking you.0 -

It triangulates the position of your wifi signal and uses your SSID and/or MAC address to uniquely identify you.0 -
I am not trying to hide my phone from trackers or save the battery life (particularly). It is just that I only use it as a phone - I use my tablet for apps etc - and so have a very basic contract. I do not want to find it being used up when I am not using the phone.
Anyway, I have now gone into PlayStore and turned off auto update for apps to see if that works.0 -

Doesn't that happen even when you are not connected to wifi? They use the phone network to know where the phone is regardless of whether you are connected to wifi or not.0 -

Just Turn mobile data off. that stops all internet activity that costs money. When you connect to a free wifi it costs nothing as its not through your phone network. Any wifi that costs money would ask for payment details and not charge through your phone network. So you simply would not give them payment details and they would not let you use the net through them. There are plenty of free wifi connections around though.0 -

Any network you have connected to before will be listed in the wifi settings. you can just scroll to it and hit the forget option and it will go from the list and the phone will no longer connect automatically when in range. There is no need to remove passwords to get rid of a wifi you dont like.0 -

It's possible, but unless the phone masts are connected to the same network provider that you happen to use, I presume it would cause your phone to drop off the network.
I guess it's not really in the phone networks' interests to allow shops to plug in to their network to track their users. And wifi tracking equipment is probably cheaper and won't require a radio broadcasting licence.0
