mobile phone turning WiFi on by itself?

I always keep the WiFi on my Sony phone turned off as a default. But it has started turning itself back on with no intervention from me. Any suggestions on cause and how to fix?

(for example last night I carefully checked wifi was off .This morning it suddenly sprang into life and started downloading Facebook notifications.)

I don't know the answer, but what's the point in keeping it off as a default?

I don't know, but do you have mobile data switched on? Is there some kind of setting that automatically switches you to wifi if the mobile data drops?

To save battery life? To stop shops from tracking you?

If you are worried about using data that costs you money just turn off mobile data in the settings. If you have connected to a certain wifi network once it will detect it automatically whenever you are in range and connect to it. If you are in range of wifi networks but have never connected to them before your phone will just display a message saying there are wifi networks available. If there is a specific wifi network that you have connected to before but you dont want to automatically connect to it in the future you can tell your phone to forget that network in the wifi settings as there is a list on your phone of all wifi networks you have connected to before.
If you are just worried about security then there are free security apps available from the likes of avg for android phones.

Sony phones have a power saving setting. If you dont want your location tracked you can turn the location setting off. You can also install avg cleaner to wipe the cache etc.

As posted above by Pappa John (source: Android Central by poster using Sony Xperia):

Setting -> Power management -> Location based Wifi (Wi-Fi activated automatically when in range of a saved Wi-Fi network) -> [Off]

That will stop your phone from using wifi signals to determine your location. It won't stop third parties from monitoring your wifi activity and determining your location.

If you have an unlimited data tariff you wouldn't want your phone jumping around trying to connect to wifi networks interrupting your perfectly good always-on data connection - or at least I don't!
