I brought a laptop recently with Windows 10 but no version of Office, i just need a basic word processing program that is compatible with Word documents, is there such a thing, hopefully a free one if possible please? I use Word in work and want to carry on tying at home, but hoping to not pay out £100+ for the privaledge

Libre Office https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/?version=5.0.0
Some posters have reported getiing install errors recently - 2503 errors iirc which appear to be an oddity with Windows 10. I recently updated my old version with this one with no issues at all.0 -
Open Office is another alternative.
Compatible with all Office documents and offers spreadsheet and word processing packages. They also do mobile phone app versions of their software0 -

There are other earlier articles that say it doesn't matter.0 -
Does your workplace have an Office 365 subscription? If so you may be eligible to install Word on your home PC/It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

For perfect document compatibility use Word online:

if you download the chrome extension you can use it offline too.0 -

If they're not Office 365 subscribers they may be part of the Home User Program (HUP), under which you can obtain the same version of Office as your employer uses for under a tenner.
Details are often hidden away on company intranets, or you can ask your HR.0 -
Both OpenOffice and LibreOffice are good, but they certainly aren't compatible with all Office documents.Open Office is another alternative.

Anything with a macro or other VBA won't be compatible, for example.0 -
I have found that Kingsoft WPS is more compatible with Microsoft than libreofficeIITYYHTBMAD0
