Cheap & Reliable Overseas Telephone Calls

Morning all,

I'm wondering if anyone can offer some advice / referrals for reputable companies that offer cheap overseas telephone calls? as two of my relatives will be in Jamaica for approximately 6 months and based on previous experience, I can see my phone bill sky rocketing.

I currently have a basic package with Virgin Media, and a very basic Pay As You Go mobile, which I rarely use, so I'm not really looking to upgrade my service if possible, can anyone offer any advice, as Google brings up a multitude of companies that I've never heard of.

Thanks in advance,

Williacg

Calling to exactly where though? UK mobiles roaming in Jamaica, Jamaican landlines, or Jamaican mobiles?
For mobile to mobile, Skype or WhatsApp are the possible solutions, assuming local-wi-fi access at both ends.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I will be calling to a Jamaican landline number with no internet connection.

Does your landline have inclusive calls to 03 numbers?

Does your landline have inclusive calls to 0845 or 0870 numbers?

Does your mobile have inclusive calls to 03 numbers?

There are multiple ways to tackle this. Some see you making international calls for zero pence per minute and others see you paying a third-party provider several pence per minute for the international leg of the call.

    Hi Ian011,

My Virgin landline is a basic package, which only includes free weekend UK calls, I'm not sure about the 03 and 08 numbers, will definitely look into further.

I have been browsing through the MSE cheap telephone call thread, and it seems that it would be easier if they had an internet facility over there, but my Great Aunt doesn't even have a computer, and so I really can't see her changing that any time soon, it took her long enough to buy a microwave!

Thanks for your response, will keep browsing.

Thanks Cisco001 for the 'heads-up' - I'll take a look through their web-site and weigh up all of my options.

Update: I couldn't recall exactly which numbers were included in my package, but since last posting, I found out that the following numbers are included:-

    - 01
    - 02
    - 03
    - 0870
    - Virgin Mobile numbers

    Thanks everyone for your help.

If you are willing to make calls abroad only at the weekend, find one that offers an 03 or 0870 access number. If you find the right one, this call will be inclusive in your allowance. You may have to also pay a small fee to the international provider.

If you need to make calls during the week, you'll need to upgrade your inclusive calls to cover weekdays, not just weekends.

An alternative is to get a SIM card from a mobile provider that offers cheap calls to international locations from the UK.

Although those mobile deals include 084 and 087 numbers, they usually don't include the specific numbers used for international dial-through services.

Provided you have a payg phone from O2 ,EE, Orange,T-Mob or Three you can use this shortcode service ,the cost will be deducted from your payg credit.

7p a minute is a good rate for Jamaica Landlines.

    See: http://www.dialacode.com/cheap-international-calls-to-Jamaica

The best rate i have seen is 4p a minute if you get a Lebara Payg Sim and your phone is unlocked. It piggy backs on the Vodafone Network.
