MOT Costs - are these fair

After lots of asking for it, I have finally got a breakdown of the costs for the MOT, although these are not huge amounts of money - were these costs reasonable? One of them seems too cheap and the other too expensive:

Lack of power and excessive smoke, MOT failure - replace fuel filter - £47.40

Reset offside headlamp alignment - £39

I still have to call the original garage that did the service - I need to see if they have a receipt for the fuel filter they said they had changed.

The garage that did the MOT never provided me with the emissions test (the pass or the fail).

  • Is it mainly labor costs?

Fuel filter is around £9 to buy as a part

When my headlight needed adjusting they did it during the test FOC.

That's my experience too. I took seconds with a screwdriver as well.

Isn't headlight adjustment the only "fix" that can be carried out during an MOT I've always had it done FOC at the time.

How will a fuel filter fix emissions? Unless it's so clogged that it is starving the engine of fuel.

    unfortunately nothing stacks up here
as said a fuel filter would not cause a fail unless it was leaking or blocked in which case car wouldn't run
headlight might be justified if its seized but more information would be needed
they sound like they are skanking you even though most people would pay the low price to get their neville bit of paper(mot in our times)
your choice just avoid next year
  • It does seem like I have been ripped off, but the only way for the car to pass was for the work to be done.

As a previous post of mine mentioned - the fuel filter was 'meant to be' changed at the service it had (3 months prior to the MOT)...

I do have the old filter here - and I cannot see how old it is or if it is faulty!!

Who did you get to do the MOT? It wasn't Kwikshaft or Halfrauds, was it?
  • Nope it was from Servicing Stop - which went to Briggate Garage in Leeds. I could only deal with Servicing stop who told me the fails and how much they would cost.

Halfords fitted the bulb with the 'we fit' service, but it looks like they put it in wrong and that cost me £39 to fix!!!
