meter testing

Options
Hi, Ever since Yorkshire Water fitted a new Automatic Meter our bills have increased by about 30%.
Our usage has not changed , and there are no leaks.

I suspect the new meter may be at fault, YW say "our meters are never wrong" !!!!

Our only hope is to have it sent away for checking at a cost to us of over £80.
Has anyone ever had this dilemma ?
Surely a meter can over- record the amount of water , nothing's perfect.

Bryan.

    Welcome to the forum.

You appear to have dismissed the possibility that your old meter was inaccurate??

There have been a number of posts about this on MSE over the years. You don't need to pay to have the meter checked as you can carry out a pretty accurate check yourself.

The last 'red number' on the meter corresponds to 1 litre when there are 3 red digits, or 10 litres when there are two red digits. If you accurately note the meter reading and get a container of a known size - say a 10 litre pail - you can measure, say, 50 litres and get a very good indication of the meter accuracy.
  • Hi Cardew,

    Thank you for your reply.

As for the old meter, it was reading the same as the one in our previous property which was new.

Yorkshire Water suggested that the old meters could have been inaccurate, I realise this could be a possibility but as they both were recording more or less the same I tend to suspect the new Automatic Meter.
I will try to do the test you suggest but the reading on this meter is difficult to see due to the design.
    Cheers,
    Bryan.
