by the way i tried having the computer on for a period of time without the net turned on. during that period there were no attempted attacks on my system. then when i turned the net on the attempts started again.
is it fair to assume from this that it is not on my system?

over the past day or so i have been getting constant pop up messages from norton telling me it has blocked an attack by trojan.cryptolocker. the messages literally pop up every second or two none stop. it is annoying. is there anything i can do to stop it. when i clicked on view details there was an option to click that said stop notifying me and i did that but the messages keep coming anyway.
    Hi!

Could you please try and run a full system scan in Safe mode with networking?

    Hi,

I found an article here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 which will guide you in restarting your computer to safe mode.

After I posted I realised I had experienced safe mode before and I ran a scan in Safe mode last night and it found nothing. However I did not do it with networking. I attempted that today. I didn't get as far as doing a scan because while the system was loading files it froze. Not knowing what to do I turned the system off and on again. It then proceeded to do some sort of check disk process. I am not keen on trying safe mode with networking again due to his experience. I did notice during the check disk process the system stated it removed some files.
The system finally started up as normal. I am now just running a full scan with the system on and not in safe mode.
Is Norton working on an update that means it detects and removes it if it's on a persons system? Alternatively if the source is on Virgin medias network can't they be contacted to be told that they need to act? They wont take my word for it but surely they would believe you guys?

No check their post count, he may be just have been looking for things to do, let's be honest 13 posts in 3 years, probably by interns, is not pro-active help.

Is this PC a laptop donna? Assuming it is still exhibiting the same symptoms then could you take the PC to someone else's wifi e.g. Starbux/Scottish Restaurant etc? If it is a Desktop does it connect to the internet via Wifi or cable ? If it is wifi you coud try tethering to you mobile phone if you have one that has data and can act as a mobile hotspot. I still think that it may be on your PC, but hey I have been proved wrong many times...

It's a desktop. It is Connected via a wired connection. The only symptoms I have is Norton saying it is stopping attempted attacks. The PC is running normally but perhaps is a little slower but that may well be down to the extra work Norton is doing constantly blocking attempted attacks and my PC was already quite slow anyway. It's 9 years old and only has 1gb of ram.
