walk in shower

Hi can anyone help please? We have moved home 2 weeks ago from private rented to council house, we had the bathroom changed to a wet room with the help of a grant at the previous property we didn't have to pay towards it as the grant covered the whole cost. Would we be able to pay for help again as hubby can't use bath at New place?
We moved due to no longer being able to afford the high rent and have taken a much smaller place from council which is not in a great area but its much more affordable trouble is unless we can get help towards adaptions we are going to struggle for sometime. Any advice is much appreciated.

As someone living in a Council house, when I needed an over bath shower put in I approached social services, who sent an OT to do an assessment, they then made their recommendations to the Council, who approved the adaptions and undertook them.

I didn't pay anything but as I understand it there may be a means test process similar to that of the Disabled Facilities Grant (which is for home owners and private renters).

It can be a very long, drawn out process.

I would encourage you to visit your Local Councils website or find a phone number to discuss this direct with them, as it does vary slightly from council to council.
  • Thanks for the quick reply. I will contact the council tomorrow. My husband gets full dla and that was the reason we did not have to contribute last time but unsure if rules have changed

When my mother had a walk in shower installed by the local authority one of the conditions was that she would be liable to pay for the work if she moved out of the property within 5 years. Maybe the same for you? worth checking first..

How long ago was it that you received the first lot of help?
  • It was just over 12 months ago
  • I think you will probably find that post number 4 will apply or they may refuse to consider it as they have already paid for the adaptation that you have been assessed as requiring. You were aware that you needed a level access shower when you applied for a council house so therefore should not have accepted one which did not already have the facilities that you needed.
  • We have been waiting for 11 years for a council house and we're advised when offered it if we refused we could wait many more years that is the only reason we accepted it otherwise we would have refused it as its in the toughest part of our area.
The housing officer also informed us that waiting for an adapted property would be like waiting for gold basically no chance.

We couldn't use an over-bath shower. Too dangerous, risk of slipping etc.

  • Thanks for all replies i will speak to council in morning. Hubby can't use over bath shower as he can't actually get in the bath due to disability.
If we have to pay them we can always go on a payment plan

Wasn't suggesting OP get an over bath shower instead , merely relating my experience of the process which happened to be with an over bath shower rather than a wetroom like OPs hubby needs.
