It isn't something you can know either!

marliepanda seems to be approaching this with the evidence at hand. We have:

I fully agree that it's not something that I can know for sure which is precisely why my post was in the form of a question:
"How exactly do you know that this exact same problem hasn't happened to many other people?"

marliepanda on the other hand was adamant that this was the first time that there has been a mould problem:
"Yes it was in response but up until then no one had allowed mound to grow and went to the papers!"

Surely you know that lack of evidence doesn't automatically prove something definitely did or did not happen.

The parent is still to blame though.

The 'twist and sip' lids have crevices where bacteria can collect - that's obvious. So, as he couldn't get to those areas, he shouldn't have continued to use the cups for drinks.

(Others seem to have managed the disassembly though).

I always look at food prep and storage items - if they cannot be thoroughly cleaned then I won't use them. It really is that simple.

He couldn't get to all the interior that was exposed to the drinks so he couldn't clean them - yet he still used the cup - bad food handling / hygiene - even worse that he gave it to his child.

Obviously I don't know what happened to anyone else. What I do see is one case in the 'news' of mould, and lots of people saying they either a) disassembled it to clean (with difficulty or not) and people B) Saying their dishwasher cleaned it just fine.

Where are the rest of the people with the issue?

I never took ours apart to clean it, i never got mould in the cap. It wasn't always washed in the dishwasher either, a soak in hot water would allow any residue to be removed without taking it apart, it's not an airtight space, the water can get in. In the absence of hordes of other folk with the same problem, i blame the owner of the cup.
  • Never paid £4 for a plastic bottle, when the old juice bottle runs out, I use that!

Worth sounding a note of caution for those not aware - although most juice bottles appear safe to reuse, it is worth checking before use as some juice (and especially water) bottles are designed for single use only and could contain BPAs or PCBs that could leach from the bottle into the drink.
